Buffalo, N.Y. – U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced the arrest of a United States citizen wanted in connection with a double homicide in Brooksville, Penn.

On March 27, 2008, CBP officers received notification from Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) that Richard Reed, a 44-year-old United States citizen from Brooksville, Penn. was being refused entry into Canada and returned to the United States.

CBSA officers advised that Reed arrived in a vehicle at the Peace Bridge in Fort Erie, Ontario on the evening of March 26, 2008, and applied for admission into Canada. Reed was referred for secondary examination where CBSA discovered a loaded 380 semi-automatic handgun and additional magazines of ammunition located in a storage pocket behind the driver's seat.

According to CBSA, during questioning, Reed allegedly confessed to the murder of his mother and father in Pennsylvania five days earlier. CBSA then contacted Pennsylvania authorities, who searched Reed’s parent’s residence and discovered the bodies of two unidentified individuals.

Reed was returned to the United States early this morning and turned over to the custody of CBP officers at the Peace Bridge border crossing in Buffalo, N.Y. where he was then detained by CBP officers until a warrant of arrest for Criminal Homicide/ Aggravated Assault was executed by the Brooksville Police Department.

Reed was arrested by CBP at 8:20 a.m. after they received verification of the warrant and confirmation of extradition to Pennsylvania. Reed was then turned over to the custody of the New York State Police and Brooksville Police Department pending extradition to Pennsylvania.

“This arrest demonstrates the excellent working relationship between U.S. and Canadian border authorities, as well as state and local law enforcement agencies,” said James T. Engleman, CBP director of field operations for the Buffalo Field Office.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
