Abstract:

This data set lists all NWS Coastal Marine Zones and Offshore Marine Zones, including Great Lakes “Open Lake” forecasts (Data Source: NWSI 10-302).

Purpose:

This data set provides a simplified listing of codes and names of National Weather Service Coastal Marine Zones and Offshore Marine Zones, including Great Lakes “Open Lake” forecasts, for use in Emergency Alert System applications.

Background:

NOAA Weather Radio (NWR) is the NWS' primary method of activating the Nation's Emergency Alert System (EAS), a system designed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).  For the benefit of the Nation's public warning system, FCC Part 11 Rules since the inception of EAS (1997) have stated a requirement for compatibility between codes used by the NWS for NWR and the EAS.  EAS equipment manufacturers and NWR receiver manufacturers have use for NWS' Marine area and zone codes and names.
