Hello to the BASINS team.

My name is Bruce Eady. I'm currently doing my honours year at the = University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. I am currently dealing with = BASINS 4.0 and am incorporating it into my research project, where the = PLOAD model is my focal point. But, I seem to have a problem using the simple (EMC) method in PLOAD. = I am modeling PO4 and total nitrogen (TN). The problem is the output, = where the Load and load per acre output shapefiles (lbs) seem to = be extremely low (in between 5 x 10-7 and 2.7 x 10-5 lbs). I'm = thinking the calculations involved are not multiplying the area of the = quaternary catchments (which are in square meters) for the output. Below = is what I have been inserting for the input.

General tab: I am using the quaternary = cathment layer for the Subbasins layer. Land Use Type is 'Other Shapefile',= as the USGS GIRAS shapefile does not work in South Africa.

Precipitation: Have specified precipitation = for each Subbasin (in inches), with the subbasin ID field set to AREA.

Land Use: Have selected the land use layer = (namely Transformed Rangelands) and the Land Use ID Field to SYMBOL_COL = (which is the field in the attribute table containing values correspon= ding to those in the EMC table)

Event Mean Concentration: I have altered a = few values here, but I don't think this will make a difference to the = output I am having problems with.

I am not dealing with the remaining tabs (Point Sources, BMPs and = Bank Erosion) for my project.

Please could you help me. If there is and additional information = regarding my procedures, please don't hesitate to ask.

Thank you.

The HSPF setup tool requires that there be one and only one stream segment per subbasin, and each stream segment must have a unique id in the shapefile attribute table. This rule is enforced by the BASINS delineation tools, but if you are using your own imported delineations I can see how it might be violated. I=20 think this problem must be related to the attributes of the streams = shapefile=20 that you are using.  The HSPF setup tool requires that there be one = and=20 only one stream segment per subbasin, and each stream segment must have = a unique=20 id in the shapefile attribute table.  This rule is enforced by the = BASINS=20 delineation tools, but if you are using your own imported delineations I = can see=20 how it might be violated.

You=20 might need to run the manual delineator to define the stream network and = calculate the stream attributes before starting the model setup=20 tool.

Duda" Subject: RE: Problems with BASINS Update Hi Mery, You're right, that is a bug. When you use the 'other shapefile' option, = the current version of the HSPF setup tool expects the 'classification = field' to contain integers, so when you used the description as a the = classification field it caused a problem. =20 We'll fix the tool so the 'classification field' can contain text, but = for now I'll suggest a work-around. Hopefully your land use layer = already has a field containing integer identifiers -- most that I've = seen do, for instance the GIRAS has lucode and description as two fields = in the attribute table. You just need to use that integer identifier. = Then if you want the model to see land use code '11' as 'urban' or = whatever within the HSPF model, you can set up a classification file, a = dbf containing those relationships, just like the file 'giras.dbf' is = used for the GIRAS land use data with BASINS. Or you can change the = descriptions in the PERLND GEN-INFO table in HSPF -- that would give you = the same result. Let me know if I need to go through this in more detail. Paul,

Running the manual delineator produces 12 instances (among 26 reaches) of multiple segments per subbasin, in some cases there are four separate segments per reach. Also, the stream segments are discontinuous in several places, especially at the intersection of several reaches.

When I first used the manual delineator it was creating a very discontinuous stream file, with stream segments completely absent in reaches where they shouldn't have been absent. To fix this problem I went through the NHD file and changed the values in the "Level" field to 1 for the segments that needed to be made a part of the stream file. That fixed my issue so that each reach had a segment like it was supposed to. Could that be contributing to the issue that I have now?

Lauren

Subject: RE: [basinsinfo] Basins to HSPF error

I think this problem must be related to the attributes of the streams shapefile that you are using.  The HSPF setup tool requires that there be one and only one stream segment per subbasin, and each stream segment must have a unique id in the shapefile attribute table.  This rule is enforced by the BASINS delineation tools, but if you are using your own imported delineations I can see how it might be violated.

You might need to run the manual delineator to define the stream network and calculate the stream attributes before starting the model setup tool.

Igor -
HSPF has been extensively in the Northern Alberta Oil Sands region, and has been accepted as the primary tool for assessing mining impacts and remediation alternatives.

The latitude is in the range of 55 - 60 degrees, so slightly further south than your study area, and the soil/terrain is referred to as 'muskeg', not really permafrost, but deep highly organic material, and snow is the dominant form of precipitation.

If you're interested, let me know, and I can send  a few papers to your personal email address - or you can google some terms like, hspf+muskeg, Muskeg River, oil sands, modeling, etc.

I have tried editing the FTable, but unfortunately I am still getting the same error 341. Here is the default FTable for the reach that is causing the problem, automatically calculated by WinHSPF using the standard method: Depth (ft) Area (acres) Volume (acre-ft) Outflow1 (ft3/s) 0 102.4729 0 0 0.356077 103.2412 36.62505 5.059397 3.56077 110.1559 378.5612 233.6527 4.451 112.0767 477.4803 338.6457 5.5637 337.1892 849.9993 431.0231 6.6764 341.9909 1227.861 787.418 114.6122 807.7701 63278.05 305059.1 222.548 1273.549 175602.5 1222056 As I now understand it, the problem is that the total of the values in column three (the maximum reach volume) is less than the total of the values in column four (the volume of water in the reach). I tried manually editing the values so those in column three are greater than those in column four (in common units), but I keep getting the same error: "The volume of water in this reach/mixed reservoir is greater than the value in the "volume" column of the last row of RCHTAB()." What am I doing wrong? One more question. When I view the watershed map in BASINS, it is oriented with the upstream end, which happens to be the west end, at the top. I would like it to display with north at the top, as is standard with maps. Do I need to change the projection (it's 1983 NAD UTM Zone 18N, if that matters), or is there some other way to reorient the map? Thank you so much for your help! Hello everyone,

Thanks to Jim and Ashley for your help.  I have tried editing the FTable, but unfortunately I am still getting the same error 341.  Here is the default FTable for the reach that is causing the problem, automatically calculated by WinHSPF using the standard method:

Depth (ft)  Area (acres)  Volume (acre-ft)  Outflow1 (ft3/s)
0 102.4729 0 0
0.356077 103.2412 36.62505 5 .059397
3.56077 110.1559 378.5612 233.6527
4.451 112.0 767 477.4803 338.6457
5.5637 337.1892 849.9993 431.0 231
6.6764 341.9909 1227.861 787.418
114.6122 807.7701 6 3278.05 305059.1
222.548 1273.549 175602.5 1222056
As I now understand it, the problem is that the total of the values in column three (the maximum reach volume) is less than the total of the values in column four (the volume of water in the reach).

Thanks,
Sarah Praskievicz

Sarah,

There is also a very useful dialogue about this error in the listserve archives.  I can't remember which month of the top of my head... Search for RCHTAB.

Hi Sarah,

The problem is with your Ftable (i.e. details of stream channel
cross-sectional geometry): the maximum defined reach volume is less than
the volume of water that HSPF is simulating as being present.  I
recommend having a look at BASINS "technical note
#2" (http://www.epa.gov/waterscience/basins/docs/tecnote2.pdf) for some
insight into the problem, and a possible solution.  You can also build a
new Ftable manually if you have some representative stream
cross-sectional geometry data to work with.

Hello,

I am a new BASINS user, attempting to use WinHSPF to model the hydrology
of the Tualatin River Basin in Oregon.  My eventual goal, part of my
thesis work, is to simulate changes in flow, sediments, and nutrients
resulting from climate change and urban development in the basin.
However, I am unable to get results for the baseline flow because I
cannot get the model to run.  I consistently get the following error:

ERROR/WARNING ID:   341   6
*
 *
*
 *  DATE/TIME: 1972/ 1/ 8  3: 0
*
 *
*
 *  RCHRES:    16
*
 *
*
 *  The volume of water in this reach/mixed reservoir is greater than
the value     *
 *  in the "volume" column of the last row of RCHTAB().  To continue the
*
 *  simulation the table has been extrapolated, based on information
contained      *
 *  in the last two rows.  This will usually result in some loss of
accuracy.       *
 *  If depth is being calculated it will also cause an error condition.
*
 *  Relevant data are:
*
 *
*
 *  NROWS         V1         V2        VOL
*
 *      8 2.8084E+09 7.7906E+09 8.7043E+09
*

I don't know what this error means or how I can fix it.  Is it possibly
a problem with the data I'm using, which I got through the BASINS data
download tool?  Or is it a problem with the way the subbasins are
defined (I used the automatic watershed delineation)?  Or something else
altogether?

I would greatly appreciate any insight on the nature of this error and
how it might be resolved.

Thanks,
Sarah Praskievicz
