Backup Power for the F-16 Block 10 - 42 Inertial Navigation Unit



1.0 SUBJECT


This RFI is for the performance based redesign of the INU Battery. A Fit, Function to serve as backup power for the INU. Support of the F-16, Block 10 - 40 fleet at Hill Air Force Base, UT. RFI responses are requested not later than 30 days after posting.


2.0 DESCRIPTION


This is not a request for proposal or an invitation for bid and is not to be construed as a commitment to award one or more resulting contracts. It is the desire of the 416TH SCMS/GUMAB to identify potential sources capable of performing redesign of this item.


The current INU Battery consists of a case with one connector, 24 nickel cadmium cells, each 1.2 volt 500 mAH connected electrically in series and wrapped with Teflon-Milar coated heater blankets, and four thermostatic switches. Output voltage not to exceed 37.0 VDC, Operating temperature -20 to +35 degrees centigrade


Specifically, this RFI seeks the following information:

3.0 REQUIREMENTS FOR THE INERTIAL NAVIGATION UNIT BATTERY


The INU Battery is the backup power for the Inertial Navigation Unit. The battery is a Ni-Cd, dedicated +28.8 volt to provide backup power to the INU during short AC power interruptions on the aircraft. During AC power interruptions, the battery continuously provides power to the INU until the battery's voltage drops below the INU's shutdown threshold, when that occurs the INU will lose all mission and maintenance data.


The purpose of this RFI is to gather information about the redesign of the INU Battery listed.


4.0 SAMPLE RESPONSE OUTLINE


Following is a suggested outline for a response to this RFI. This outline is intended to minimize the effort of the respondent and structure the responses for ease of analysis by the government. Nevertheless, respondents are free to develop their response as they see fit.

2. Please describe any projects you have been involved in that are similar in concept to what is described in this RFI, including management and operations approach and any relevant lessons learned.


3. Identify your capability to meet the battery specifications, as listed: Height - 5.12 inches, Length - 8.77 inches, Width - 1.03 inches, Weight - 1.71 lbs, Internal heater requirements - 115VAC, 400Hz, single phase, a life span of at least five years.
