During the months of April-Sept. 2005, I added 38 headings to my review file. Of these, 22 were vetted and submitted to Library of Congress (LC). (The other 11 in the lists above had come to my attention earlier.) The backlog continues to grow, but more slowly.

Major disappointments: lack of progress on chronological subdivisions, on the elimination of Hamitic from headings, and on revisions in the use of “Bantu-speaking peoples” and “Indigenous peoples”, especially as used for the majority population of South Africa.

The review at LC is timely. Headings submitted at end of October are scheduled for approval during November. Sometimes there are transmission problems, which Gracie Gilliam takes care of when I remember to alert her. I get timely notification of significant changes made to the proposals.

I continue to monitor the Tentative Weekly List and Weekly List for new or revised headings. I have noticed the increasing use of electronic sources. Some of these new sources merely recycle information from other secondary sources, introduce new errors, and are unlikely to be permanently available. The appendix lists the 104 new subjects submitted by non-funnel sources, including 47 from LC.

APPENDIX: NON-FUNNEL NEW AFRICANA SUBJECT HEADINGS

In addition to those submitted by the ALC funnel, the Weekly List, April 2005-Sept. 2005, of LC’s Cataloging Policy and Support Office, included the following newly approved headings. The submitting library’s MARC21 code appears at the end of each entry (except for those from LC). Revised authority records are not included in this list.
