Adobe Acrobat Reader Version 4.0 and 5.0

Below, you will find links to the Adobe Acrobat Reader which is required software to view your completed MPN. Once at the Adobe web site, you will be required to submit the following information in three steps. STEP 1- choose a language (i.e. English), a platform (i.e. Windows or Mac) and a location (i.e. USA). STEP 2- (Optional). Step 3- will automatically be populated with data, according to the information you submit in Step1. You will be required to click the "DOWNLOAD" link to complete the process. You will then need to save the download to your computer and then install the program.


Adobe lists over 150 available versions of Adobe Acrobat Reader. If you prefer to choose the software version yourself, you may view the complete list of available Adobe Acrobat Readers by using the following link:

Configuring Acrobat for Windows

    Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0 Configuration --To configure Adobe Acrobat Reader version 4.0 properly for the use with the electronic Master Promissory Note web site follow the few simple steps listed below:
  1. Open the Acrobat Reader version 4.0

  2. Choose File from the top menu bar

  3. Choose Preferences from the drop down menu

  4. Choose General from the options listed. (The General Preferences window will appear)

  5. Uncheck the box labeled Web Browser Integration

  6. Select OK

  7. Close Adobe Acrobat Reader version 4.0

    Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 Configuration --To configure Adobe Acrobat Reader version 5.0 properly for the use with the electronic Master Promissory Note web site follow the few simple steps listed below:
  1. Open the Acrobat Reader version 5.0

  2. Choose Edit from the top menu bar

  3. Choose Preferences from the drop down menu

  5. Uncheck the box labeled Display PDF in Browser

  6. Make sure the box labeled, "Check Browser Settings When Starting Acrobat" is checked

  7. Select OK

Configuring Netscape 4.x for MAC OS to use the Acrobat Reader plug-in.

The Acrobat Reader installer places the PDF Viewer plug-in in the Plug-ins folder within the Netscape Communicator or Netscape Navigator folder. With the PDF Viewer plug-in installed, clicking a PDF file link in a Web page opens the file in an Acrobat Reader window within Netscape's browser window. All the toolbars and controls available in Reader as a stand-alone application are available when using the browser plug-in.

However, you must make sure that Netscape's preferences are set to use the PDF Viewer plug-in:

  1. In Netscape, choose Edit > Preferences to display the Preferences dialog box.

  2. Select Applications in the Navigator category of the Category list.

  3. Select Portable Document Format file type in the Description list of the Applications preferences panel, and then click Edit.

  4. Select Plug-in in the Handled By area, and then choose PDF Viewer from the Plug-in pop-up menu.

  5. Click OK to close the Edit Type dialog box, and then click OK to close the Preferences dialog box.


Configuring Internet Explorer for Mac OS to use the Acrobat Reader plug-in.

When Reader is configured as a plug-in, the PDF file displays within the browser window. The Acrobat Reader installer places the PDF Viewer plug-in in the Plug-ins folder within the Internet Explorer folder. With the PDF Viewer plug-in installed, clicking a PDF file link in a Web page opens the file in an Acrobat Reader window within Internet Explorer's browser window. All the toolbars and controls available in Reader as a stand-alone application are available when using the browser plug-in.

However, you must make sure that Internet Explorer's preferences are set to use the PDF Viewer plug-in. To do this:

  1. In Internet Explorer, choose Edit > Preferences to display the Preferences dialog box.

  2. Under Receiving Files in the left pane, select File Helpers.

  3. Select Portable Document Format in the File Helper Settings list, and then click Change.

  4. In the Handling area of Edit File Helper dialog box, choose View with Plug-in from the How to Handle pop-up menu.

  5. In the Handling area, choose PDF Viewer from the Plug-in Name pop-up menu.

  6. Click OK to close the Edit File Helper dialog box, and then click OK to close the Preferences dialog box.


Note: Adobe Acrobat 4.x and 5.0 currently do not offer native support for Apple's new Mac OS X operating system. Acrobat Reader® 5.0 runs in Mac OS X native mode but has not been fully tested at this time based on the current ship date. Users running Acrobat Reader 5.0 under Mac OS X may experience a few inconsistencies.

Print PDF Documents from Acrobat Reader --To print a PDF document: Select "File", then "Print", or click the "Print" button. Specify the printer, the page range, the number of copies, (and other options), then click OK.

Save PDF Documents from Acrobat Reader --To save a PDF document: Select "File", then "Save A Copy", or click the "Save" button. To save the document in a different folder, click a different drive in the "Save In" box, or double-click a different folder in the folder list. To save the document in a new folder, click the "Create New Folder" button. In the File name box, type a name for the document, then click "Save".

Clearing Your Browser's Cache --Your browser's cache stores the contents of all the web pages that you have visited during a session. To safeguard your information and prevent another user from viewing what you have entered, you should clear the cache memory. To clear your browser's cache, follow the instructions below:

    Clearing Cache for Netscape 4.75 users:

  1. Select "Edit", then "Preferences".

  2. Select "Advanced" from the Category listing.

  3. Select "Cache". · Select the "Clear Disk Cache" button then the "Clear Memory Cache" button.

  4. Select "OK". Internet Explorer 5.0 and 5.5 users:

  5. Select "Tools", then "Internet Options".

  6. Select the "General" tab at the top.

  7. Select the "Clear History" button.

  8. Select "Yes" to confirm.

  9. Select "OK".

    Clearing Cache for Internet Explorer 5.0 and 5.5 users:

  1. Select "Tools", then "Internet Options".

  2. Select the "General" tab at the top.

  3. Select the "Clear History" button.

  4. Select "Yes" to confirm.

  5. Select "OK".

Exiting the Application --It is important that you properly exit from the electronic Master Promissory Note web site when your work is complete. To ensure that your session information is cleared, please click on the Exit button, located at the bottom of each page within the electronic Master Promissory Note web site . This button will clear your session information and return you to the Home page. Exiting properly is especially important for users of Internet Explorer 5.0.

Supported Browser Type and Version --To view the electronic Master Promissory Note web site effectively, you will need one of the following supported browsers from either Microsoft or Netscape : Internet Explorer 5.0 ,5.5, or Navigator. 4.0, 4.75 or 4.77. The electronic Master Promissory Note web site has been tested with version 5.0, release up to and including 5.5. If you have an earlier version, your view and interaction of the site may be significantly impaired. It is recommended that you use I.E. 5.0 or 5.5.

Please be aware that Internet Explorer version 5.0 and 5.5 have a feature that allows you to save your login and password for any form that you submit using the browser. Note: For security reasons, we recommend that you do not save your login/password using this feature. It is also recommended that you follow the directions below, concerning a configuration parameter for Internet Explorer version 5.0 .

  • Configuring MS Internet Explorer

    In the menu bar, select "Tools", then select "Internet Options". At the top of the Internet Options Pop-Up that appears, select the "Advanced" tab. Scroll down to the bottom to locate "Security" options and uncheck the option that reads, "Do not save encrypted pages to disk". Then select the "OK" button at the bottom of the box.


  • Netscape Navigator Version 4.0 (release 4.75 through 4.77)

The electronic Master Promissory Note web site has been tested with versions 4.0, releases 4.5 up to and including 4.77. To download the Netscape Navigator browser, use this link:


Netscape Navigator version 6.0 is not supported by this site and will not be allowed by the PIN site.

AOL Compatibility Issues

The built-in AOL web browsers version 7.0, version 9.0 are compatible with the http://dlenote.ed.gov web site. If you have an early version, your view and interaction of the site may be significantly impaired. It is recommended that you use the latest version.

To use a non-AOL browser, please follow these simple steps:

For Windows users:

  1. Connect to AOL

  2. Minimize the AOL Window by clicking on the minimize button located on the top right hand corner of the screen.

  3. Go to: Start|Programs|Internet Explorer --or-- Start|Programs|Netscape

  4. After you have started either Internet Explorer or Netscape, go to the http://dlenote.ed.gov web site

For Macintosh users:

  1. Connect to AOL

  2. Hide the AOL window by using the finder menu at the top right of the Macintosh menubar.

  3. Locate the Internet Explorer or Netscape icon on your desktop, on your hard drive, or on the Apple menu and double click it.

  4. After you have started either Internet Explorer or Netscape, go to the http://dlenote.ed.gov web site

Pop Up Windows --Some links in the electronic Master Promissory Note web site will open a new browser window instead of changing the screen that is currently open. This new window is called a popup window. You can browse though this second window without losing your place within the electronic Master Promissory Note web site.

Session Time Out --When you enter the electronic Master Promissory Note web site from the PIN Site, a session will be created for you. After 30 minutes of inactivity, your session will "timeout". The next time you access the web page, you will be redirected back to the PIN Site, where you will need to validate your information again.

Using the Tab Buttons --The Tab key on your computer's keyboard can be used to move between input boxes on the screen. By pressing the TAB key, the cursor will move from the current input box to the next input box.



Enable JavaScript on Your Browser

To complete your MPN, you must have JavaScript enabled on your browser. Please check your JavaScript setting. The following instruction explains how to enable JavaScript on your browser.

MS Internet Explorer Version 5.x

  • Select Tool -> Internet Option from the browser’s menu.

  • Select Security tab and click Custom Level button.

  • Scroll down to Scripting -> Active scripting. Select Enable to enable JavaScript.

  • Click OK button to save your change. Click OK again on Internet Options window to return to your browser.

  • For the change to take effect, click Refresh button on your browser window.


Netscape Navigator 4.x

  • Select Edit -> Preferences from the browser’s menu.

  • In Preferences window, select Advanced category. Make sure Enable JavaScript checkbox is checked to enable the JavaScript.

  • Click OK button to save your change and to return to the browser window.

  • For the change to take effect, click Reload button on your browser window.
