New Ancillary Variables USTAR_PI and DATA_COMMENT . . .
New ancillary variables have been added to allow tower teams to communicate with the synthesis efforts.  The USTAR_PI allows the tower team to specify the u* they normally use in processing flux data along with a reference that explains how this value was derived.  The DATA_COMMENT_PI and DATA_COMMENT_CURATOR allow the tower team or the site curator respectively to enter a comment about the data available for the site. These three variables all have a variable type of General.
Major update to the reports on the fluxdata site . . .
Today we rolled out a new redesigned set of reports based on feedback from many of you. The new reports have three major changes.

1. Variables will be ordered within a report alphabetically by site ID and then variable with all measurements of the same variable at the same level (no subsections)

2. There are now clear indications of whether the variable was submitted recently or has been received from older flux databases and workshops.

3. A release identifier of LATEST has been appended to the file name.  This means it is the latest data we have.
Links added to enable direct download of reports . . . .
Under the dataset information and the data browsing tabs on the site, there are now (ftp) links.  Choosing these links will enable direct download of the excel version of the report.
Upgrade to ancillary data underway . . . .
Thanks to a great deal of work by site investigators, we have received significant amounts of new ancillary data.  We are in the process of surfacing this data over the next week.  We have now merged the ancillary data we had prior to the BADM template with the BADM data when it is available.  The first part of the web site to get the ancillary data is the AmeriFlux sub-page.  The Data Browsing tab lnks will be updated next.
Matlab interface now works under Unix systems

A new revision of the Matlab interface renders it compatible with Mac OSX, Unix, and Linux systems. You can get it as a zip archive directly http://bwc.lbl.gov/Tools/CubeAccessLib2008-11-10.zip Of course, this library still works under Windows. PLEASE NOTE THE CHANGE IN THE INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS IN THE USER DOCUMENTATION IF YOU ARE UPGRADING FROM A PREVIOUS VERSION.

Expanded site PI access . . .
In order to improve the ancillary data collection process, access to the fluxdata web site has been expanded to include PIs from flux sites that do not currently have data in the fluxnet dataset.  If you are in this category, access to the fluxdata site will give you access to update and view your the data we have about your site only. It will not give you any other access beyond that provided to the public. If you are a flux tower PI and would like a login on the fluxdata site, please contact fluxdata-support@fluxdata.org for the access code.
Access to the FLUXNET synthesis dataset and proposal submission instructions . . . .
At the current time, the access to the FLUXNET synthesis dataset is restricted to PIs of sites that have data in the FLUXNET synthesis set and people working on a paper proposal that has been accepted. If you would like to submit a proposal, please see the instructions here.  We are currently looking at adding other tower PIs that do not have data in the dataset to the access list. (As can be seen from the more recent entry above, all site contacts now can obtain logins on the fluxdata site).
Updates to ancillary data . . . .
In our latest upgrades to the fluxdata web site, we have revamped the ancillary data handling.  The ancillary information that has been collected over the last 1.5 years has been merged with the information we have been receiving via the BADM templates being submitted by sites.  This merger allows users easy access to significantly more ancillary information for those sites that have submitted BADM templates.

There is also now a new ancillary data update function that allows users to submit updates and new values to any ancillary information about a site including BADM data.  Once submitted, the update is routed to the curator for the site for approval. Visit the "Ancillary Data Update" tab to use this new feature.
New revision of Matlab data cube interface available
We have a new version of out Matlab cube interface. This version uses a secure data channel and has expanded documentation with real-life examples of data queries and Matlab analyses. You can get it as a ZIP archive directly from http://bwc.lbl.gov/Tools/CubeAccessLib2008-07-21.zip (link removed, please see more recent posting on the Matlab interface). Complete documentation with installation instructions is included in the package as a file named BWC Cube-Matlab Interface. This is available in both a MS Word (.doc) and PDF format file. A PDF is also available in the User Support section of this web site.

The interface is tested to work reliably under Windows. If you run Matlab on other platforms and would like to use the interface, please let us know.

We are planning to develop a next-generation of this interface that supports analysis and visualization tools other than Matlab. We have so far identified S-Plus and ArcGIS as tools to interface to our cubes. Do you use other software tools for analysis that you would like to have access to our cube data? If so, please drop us a note at fluxdata-support@fluxdata.org.

Proposal teams need to specify proposal status before September. . .
(Posted on behalf of Markus Reichstein)

Since there have been some questions about which proposals are being pursued and whether PIs have been contacted in the case of active proposals, we have added a status indicator for each proposal at http://www.fluxdata.org/DataInfo/Dataset%20Doc%20Lib/PaperWritingTeamsInfo.aspx (credit goes to the team from Berkeley Water Center and Univ. of Virginia). For the sake of maximum transparency, we ask you to update your proposal status at that page via "View/Manage" accordingly (the default is unknown). Once you have specified your proposal status, select the "Submit" button. It costs you 1 minute.... By the rules outlined, the SMC should review the status of the proposals in September then.

Thanks in advance, Markus & Dario
