CDDIS Bulletin - April 1997
Volume 12 No. 4
In this issue:
About the cover: The map on the cover of this issue of the CDDIS Bulletin shows the current global IGS network using the Berghaus Star projection, a decorative, modified azimuthal map projection.
The CDDIS has supported the International GPS Service for Geodynamics (IGS) as a global data center since its start in June 1992. During 1996, the CDDIS routinely archived data from over 110 sites, averaging nearly two Gbytes in compressed data volume per month. Nearly 40,000 observation days were archived from 126 distinct sites. Table 1 below lists the GPS tracking sites archived in the CDDIS during 1996. Figure 1 illustrates the amount of data transferred to/from the CDDIS during 1996. Over one million files were transferred in 1996, totalling approximately 360 Gbytes in volume. Averaging these figures, users transferred 85K files per month, totalling nearly 30 Gbytes in size. The chart in Figure 2 details the total number of host accesses per month with the number of distinct (i.e., unique) hosts per month shown as an overlay. Here, a host access is defined as an initiation of an ftp session; this session may transfer a single file, or many files. Figure 3 illustrates the profile of users accessing the system during 1996; these figures represent the number of distinct hosts in a particular country or organization. Approximately one third of the users of GPS data available from the CDDIS come from U.S. government agencies, universities, or corporations.

The International GPS Service for Geodynamics (IGS) now produces high quality, combined orbit predictions. These daily solutions, derived by the IGS Analysis Coordinator and based on contributions from the five individual analysis center predictions of AIUB, NRCan, GFZ, JPL, and SIO, are available shortly after 23:00 UTC (but no later than 23:30 UTC). These solutions are available from CDDIS since GPS week 0895 (March 02-08, 1997); the files are denoted IGPwwww7.typ, where wwww is the GPS week number, and typ is the file type (SP3 for orbit, SUM for summary, and ERP for Earth rotation parameters). All IGS predicted orbit products can be retrieved from the CDDIS in subdirectories by GPS week of the main directory GPS3:[PRODUCTS].
Dr. Richard Gross (JPL, email: rsg@logos.jpl.nasa.gov) has submitted his data sets of polar motion, length-of-day, and UT1-UTC values generated from several space geodetic techniques. These data can be retrieved from anonymous FTP on the CDDIS in the directory ANON_DIR:[JPL.1996]; the files available are as follows:
SPACE96. |
Contains polar motion and UT1-UTC values generated at one-day intervals from a combination of space geodetic measurements (VLBI, SLR, LLR, and GPS) spanning September 27, 1976 through February 07, 1997. |
SPACE96.LOD |
Contains excess length-of-day (LOD) estimates from the combined Earth orientation series in SPACE96 spanning September 27, 1976 through February 07, 1997. |
COMB96. |
Contains a Kalman filter combination of independent optical astrometry (BIH and ILS) measurements of the Earth's orientation with the space geodetic measurements comprising SPACE96; consists of polar motion and UT1-UTC values spanning January 20, 1962 to February 05, 1997 at five-day intervals. |
COMB96.LOD |
Contains excess length-of-day (LOD) estimates from the combined Earth orientation series in COMB96 spanning January 20, 1962 to February 05, 1997 at five-day intervals. |
POLE96. |
Contains a combination of optical astrometry (BIH and ILS) measurements with the space geodetic measurements comprising COMB96; consists of polar motion values spanning January 19, 1900 to January 20, 1997 at 30.4375-day intervals. |
This section is designed to give brief notices of special events, new data sets, or problems encountered in recent months. The CDDIS staff believes the user community should be informed of these problems in order to ensure that the best results possible are produced from data issued by the archive.
Toshimichi Otsubo (Communications Research Laboratory, CRL) reports that all on-site normal points from the CRL station in Tokyo (station number 7308) from February 11 through 27, 1997 have an unrecoverable time bias, up to hundreds of microseconds, because of a clock problem. CRL regrets any inconvenience this error has caused.
ATSC reports that three NASA SLR systems have experienced timing problems over the last few months. These problems are detailed below with listings of passes affected for each station. ATSC regrets any inconvienience this problem has caused.
TLRS-3 (Station 7403) in Arequipa, Peru. This station experienced an excessive drift rate with their station clock. This high drift rate affected all TLRS-3 taken between January 24, 1997 through March 10, 1997, inclusive. The drift rate was corrected by replacing the station clock on March 10, 1997 at 21:20 GMT. The data during this period are recoverable by applying the epoch corrections given in Table 2 below. In order to correct TLRS-3 timetags these epoch corrections must be subtracted from the normal point timetags using the equation:
corrected timetag = normal point timetag - epoch correction

MOBLAS-8 (Station 7109) in Quincy, California. This system experienced problems with their station clock affecting all MOBLAS-8 data taken between December 03, 1996 through December 16, 1996, inclusive, and January 09, 1997 and January 17, 1997, inclusive. The data during these two periods are recoverable by applying the epoch corrections given in Table 3 below. In order to correct MOBLAS-8 timetags these epoch corrections must be subtracted from the normal point timetags using the equation:
corrected timetag = normal point timetag - epoch correction

HOLLAS (Station 7210) in Haleakala, Hawaii. This station experienced an excessive drift rate in their station clock. This high drift rate affected all HOLLAS taken between December 13, 1994 through June 14, 1995, inclusive. The drift rate was corrected by a combination of replacing the station clock and performing Cesium adjustments. The data during this period are recoverable by applying the epoch corrections given in Table 4 below. In order to correct HOLLAS timetags these epoch corrections must be subtracted from the normal point timetags using the equation:
corrected timetag = normal point timetag - epoch correction

Table 5 on page 13 lists an update to the SLR on-site normal point pass totals for 1996 as previously published in the February 1997 issue of the CDDIS Bulletin. These figures reflect late arriving data and data base checks performed in recent weeks. As stated in the February 1997 article, these figures are based on weekly, monthly, and yearly reports and are available on CDDIS through anonymous ftp in the directory ANON_DIR:[REPORTS.SLRWEEK.yyyy] (where yyyy is the year) or through the WWW at URL ftp://cddis.gsfc.nasa.gov/reports/slrweek/ . Interested users can receive these reports automatically on a weekly basis by contacting Carey Noll (noll@cddis.gsfc.nasa.gov). We regret any confusion the previously published values may have caused.
Since the February 1997 issue of the CDDIS Bulletin, the CDDIS has archived data from the following new GPS tracking sites:
