Renewable Energy Interactive Mapping Tool
What's a KMZ file?
KMZ files are the file type primarily associated with Google Earth. Opening a KMZ file will automatically open Google Earth on most computers that have Google Earth installed.
EPA's Renewable Energy Interactive Map (KMZ, 1.2 MB) contains all of the information in EPA's Renewable Energy on Contaminated Lands and Mining Sites maps in one easy-to-use file. Opening this file will automatically add a layer to Google Earth containing detailed information about renewable energy siting on contaminated lands.
To use this tool:
- First, make sure you have Google Earth loaded onto your computer. You can download Google Earth for free online.
- Second, open the Renewable Energy Interactive Map (KMZ, 1.2 MB) to launch the Renewable Energy Maps and associated site information.
- Third, make sure to check the box next to "RE_on_EPA_Tracked_Sites" in Google Earth's left navigation panel. Doing so will add a new layer of dots to the Google Earth map.
Advantages of using the Renewable Energy Interactive Mapping Tool
This tool makes it possible to view EPA's information about siting renewable energy on contaminated land and mining sites alongside other information contained in Google Earth. Furthermore, detailed information about each site is available in addition to the site's location. By clicking on a dot associated with a site, you can view:
- The site name
- The acreage
- The EPA program and Region managing the site
- The EPA site ID number
- The site status
- Detailed descriptions of renewable energy potential at that site
- Links to more information about renewable energy potential at that site
Geospatial Data
The data used to create the Interactive Mapping Tool is also available in XLS format: Interactive Mapping Data (Excel, 7.9 MB). This data can be exported for use in other mapping applications.
