NASA-JSC Data
During the week of 13-15 October 2008, we ran Iron and Protons for two
experiments from NASA-JSC. The data acquisition was operated in two
different configurations, labeled below as either Scaler or Spectrum/Timing.
When running in the Scaler mode, we accumulated the number of beam particles
that passed through the two beam counting scintillators during a 4 second beam
spill. The scintillators had cross sectional area of 1.08 cm2 and 10.28 cm2,
respectively. During the runs, the small scintillator was upstream of
the large scintillator. Both were placed slightly above (~1cm) and
downstream (~20cm) of the two JSC detectors.
In order to record the beam intensity to compare with the dosimetry, we
operated in Scaler mode where scalers counted the number of beam particles
seen by each scintillator, as well as counting a 10kHz clock pulse, and the
number of beam spills. These counts are accumulated in a scaler that
is not resetting. The scaler is read out once per spill (every 4
seconds), and the spill counter should increment with each record. The
files have a time stamp at the beginning and end of each file.
Iron ion running is described first.
When running in Scaler mode (runs 1-2), the event record has the following format:

In order to study the performance of the proportional counter, we split
the signal with a passive splitter. Half of the signal was
differentiated using a pass-through capacitor into a discriminator
operating at a -10 mV threshold. The other half of the signal was
delayed (~2 microseconds in cables) and sent to a Peak Sensing ADC (CAEN
V785) for digitising. This allowed us to get a look at the
spectrum online.
When running in Spectrum/Timing mode (runs 3-11), the event record has the following format:

We also ran in a Timing only mode (runs 12-14) where no ADC information
was taken, to study the distribution of Proportional Chamber triggers
throughout the 300 millisecond long beam spill. Both Word #1 and
Word #3 are the 10 kHz clock pulse, but in Word #3 the scaler is reset
at the beginning of every 4 second spill cycle.

Although the event record was the same for runs 18-24, the mode of data
taking was not. In runs 18, 23 and 24 we were triggered by the
Proportional Chamber for spectral measurements and event rate studies.
In Runs 19-22 the scalers were read out only once per spill in order to
allow for comparison with the dosimetry results.
Proton running is described second.
For the proton running, the data format for all runs (except
