Help
Easy Search
Enter your search term (s) in the box to conduct a search on the full bibliographic record (which is all available indexed fields.) This does not search the full text. To search for a phrase, enter it in double-quotes. Boolean operators can also be used within the query box for broadening or narrowing search terms. For more details on structuring a search, see the "Additional Tips" section. You can select a field and order in which to sort the results by clicking on sort by drop box and clicking on a field. Then choose the order of ascending or descending. The default is set to publication date in descending order. Other options for sorting are relevance, system entry date, resource/document type, title, research organization, sponsoring organization, and OSTI identifier. Click on the "Search" button to start the search. Note that with the large number of records in ETDEWEB, it is strongly recommended that you enter very specific search terms for the most targeted and fastest results possible.
Advanced Search
Sorting
Your search results will be sorted in ascending or descending order based on your "Sort By" selection. The default is Publication Date in descending order. Other options for sorting are relevance, system entry date, resource/document type, title, research organization, sponsoring organization, and OSTI identifier. Searching by relevance normally gives faster results, but may rank older records higher than newer records.
Term Searches
Enter your search criteria into as few or as many fields as desired. To search for a phrase, enter it in double-quotes. Click on the "Search" button to start the search. Multiple words entered as search terms must all appear in the record/full text in order to be returned in the search results, or, in other words, an implicit AND is added between each term. Also, if search terms are entered for more than one field on the "advanced search" page, these search criteria are also connected with an implicit AND. For example, a search of "bibliographic data" containing IEA and "title" containing hydro will find records where both hydro is somewhere in the title and IEA is somewhere in the bibliographic record. For more details on structuring a search, see the "Additional Tips" section. Field choices are:
- All Fields, which searches all the fields in the bibliographic citation (does not include full-text pages)
- Bibliographic Data, which searches all the fields in the bibliographic citation
- Full Text, which searches indexed full text
- Creator/Author
- Title
- Abstract
- Subject
- Identifier numbers, which searches all the number fields, including the identifier, the report number(s), the contract number, and other numbers
- Research Organization
- Sponsoring Organization
Author Select
While you can always enter an author name in the search box, another feature allows you to choose a specific author's full name and its variations. The author select tool assists in identifying variation(s) of an author's name and identifying multiple authors. Selected author(s) are 'submitted' to the Advanced Search. To use this tool, click on the "Select" button next to the "creator/author" field from "advanced search".
In the first column called "author select", type in a name, or the first few letters of a name, in the last name and/or first name search boxes. Then, select "Go". An attempt will be made to match authors that most closely relate to the text you typed.
In the second column called "authors", a list of matches appears. Click on the "add all" and/or "add" button(s) beside the name(s) you wish to include in your search. Your selections will appear in the third column called "selection list".
From the "selection list" column, you can remove items from the selection by clicking on the "remove" button beside the items you wish to remove. You can clear your entire list by clicking on "clear your list!" link.
To search for the authors in your list, click on the "submit" button. Selected authors appear on the "advanced search" in the "creator/author" search box with an "or" operator. You can edit the field if necessary. Click on "search" to submit the search.
Note that sometimes no records will be retrieved when using the author select tool. This occurs because the author select tool operates from an index of all authors in the site's database, some of which are not available through ETDEWEB.
Limit To
You may limit your search results by entering "publication year(s)" and/or by selecting a pre-defined "resource/document type", "publication country", and/or "language" from the Drop-down menus. "All" is the default for each of the limit-to drop-down menus. "Resource/document types" available in the system for limiting searches are all, book, conference, journal article, miscellaneous, patent, patent application, software manual, technical report, or thesis/dissertation.
Date Searches
Date searches can be done using the "publication year". A numeric four-digit year should be entered in the "from" and "to" year boxes. To search for one specific year, enter the same date in the "from" and "to" date boxes.
Search Results

Then choose "save" or "open". For addition information, see "download citations using EndNote".
Download or View Full Text
- To view full text, click on the associated icon or "view full text". (If it is the first time to view or save full text during a session, you will see an attribution page. If so, click on the full text icon or the "view" link.) The full text will appear within the browser if the full-text viewer has been loaded as a plug-in.
- If it is the first time to view or save full text during a session and you wish to save a full text file, click on the full text icon or the "view full text" link. You will see an attribution page (only if it is the first time to view or save full text during a session). Click on the "download document" link or position the cursor over the icon and right click once with the mouse. Select "save link as..." or "save target as..." and enter the file name with the proper extension for the file type (for example, .pdf for PDF files). After the file has been saved, open it from within the appropriate viewer (i.e., Acrobat Reader, Microsoft Word).
- If it is not the first time to view or save full text during a session and you wish to save a full text file, right click once with the mouse on the full text icon or left click once with the mouse on the "view full text" link. Select "save link as..." or "save target as..." and enter the file name with the proper extension for the file type (for example, .pdf for PDF files). After the file has been saved, open it from within the appropriate viewer (i.e., Acrobat Reader, Microsoft Word).
- ETDEWEB supports download management capabilities with the byte range request enhancement implemented. Download manager software often improves the speed and reliability of downloads for the end user by offering scheduled downloads, "resume" support, and error recovery for downloads. See the "Other Recommendations" section of the ETDEWEB "Technical Requirements", for additional information and links to download management software.
- Full text available is in a variety of formats, although efforts have been made to make most documents available as PDF. As a result, you may be able to choose from format options when viewing/downloading. Full text may be in PDF, Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, SGML, HTML, XML, TIFF Group 4, or Postscript. Paper documents have been scanned and made available for viewing/downloading in PDF. All full text that is in a non-PDF electronic format is made available for download in the original format and/or in PDF.
- If the full text consists of more than one file, it is compressed (zipped) for downloading. It will need to be uncompressed (unzipped) before it can be viewed.
- For information on obtaining viewers or unzip utilities
for the various formats, see "other recommendations" in the "technical
requirements" section of Help. Format possibilities for full text are indicated by these icons:
- Microsoft Word
- WordPerfect
- HTML
- Postscript
- ZIP
- TIFF
- SGML
- XML
- Default/Other
LINK This icon on the search results or bibliographic citation page means that a link has been provided by the input source or a link is provided to the DOI (digital object identifier). It may be a direct link to the document, or it could be a link to a publication page, or to other information about how to get the full text. The URL is also shown in the availability field and/or DOI field.
View or Search Individual Full Text Pages
- If electronic individual pages are available, these can be viewed and searched by clicking on the link "access individual pages" provided at the top of the "bibliographic citation" page. This feature can be particularly useful if you need to view a specific paper in a large proceeding. You must have a PDF viewer installed as a plug-in to access individual pages.
- You may select a specific page number to access from the "select from all page" drop down box. Then click on the "go" button.
- You may search the full text by entering a search term or phrase in double quotes in the "search the full text for" box. Then click on the "search" button. The search results appear in the second drop down box called the "select from search results". By choosing one of these page numbers in the drop down box, you can then click go and go directly to that page that contains your search term or phrase.
Federated Search
Searching Federated Sources
The ETDEWEB Federated Search allows you to search ETDEWEB along with other external sources of interest simultaneously with consolidated results. Some sources may search multiple databases. Such is the case with Science.gov and Science Conference Proceedings. To do a federated search, simply type in your key word(s), like wastewater treatment (no need for quotes, we phrase-search by default in federated searches), select the sources to search, and select "Search". Remember, you can select specific sources to search, or query all of them at once by selecting "All".
The progress bar will time out in 5 minutes. This means that if a particular database is running slow, you may not get all those results during that search session. Also, be as specific as possible with your search terms so that searches return swift and pertinent results.
Viewing Federated Search Results
Unlike many search engines, our results are retrieved in real time, so it could take a minute, especially since ETDEWEB results are additionally screened to get those with more recent publication dates. Total number of search results may be restricted by the database. Select the individual source to go directly to that site.
Results are ranked by default into relevancy clusters, or grouped in a way most likely to match your search query using QuickRank™. Our special QuickRank formula filters results, sending you the most relevant returns. This means that the number of QuickRank returns may differ from the number of raw returns from the individual source listing, which aren't filtered by QuickRank. Results will be returned in relevancy clusters: indicates very high relevancy, indicates high relevancy, indicates medium high relevancy, indicates low relevancy. Our QuickRank filter is based on placement of key words. If your key word is not in a prime location in the record, likely the result won't be ranked. Your results will contain top tier sources in terms of relevancy.
If you want to see your results listed by the source rather than by relevancy, select the "Results by Source" button. If your search only returns three (3) or fewer ranked results, we'll send you directly to our "Results by Source". You can also select the "More" button to explore deeper into each source's results.
Results are linked to expanded information. Select the linked title or PDF logo to view a specific record or document, or select the checkboxes of items you wish to view. (Note: full text may not be available for every record.)
You can explore your results on the Marked Records page. "Mark All" selects all your results for further viewing on our "Marked Records" page. "List Marks" presents a seamless, scrollable list of expanded results you marked during the current session. From the Marked Records page, a PDF logo indicates a PDF is available for that result. "Clear Marks" will delete all previous marks. Use this on a routine basis to erase marked items from the session. Records are not automatically cleared after viewing. "Previous Page" sends you back to the previous page. You can also submit searches from the results page.
Additional Tips
Case Sensitivity
Queries conducted in this system are case insensitive. A term entered in either upper case, lower case, or mixed case will match terms that are in upper case, lower case, and/or mixed case.Drop-down Pick Lists
To assist you in formulating queries, drop-down pick lists have been created for select fields. Drop-down pick lists are lists of standardized values that are valid for a particular field. You can select one value from the drop-down pick list. To select one, click on the value you want included in the your query.
Number Searching
For bibliographic citation fields, the best search results can be obtained by entering numbers without any punctuation or spaces. Numbers are not specifically indexed/available for searches in the full text. Although some numbers may be searchable if they are surrounded by delimiters such as parenthesis, full text searching for numbers is not recommended.Wildcards
Using a wildcard allows you to search for terms with the same prefix or stem.
- The asterisk (*) is used as a
single-character or multi-character wildcard
for term expansion.
- The use of this wildcard will return results if no character, one character, or multiple characters are found in place of it. For example, a search for compute* will return results that contain terms such as compute, computes, computer, and computers.
- Term expansion using the multi-character wildcard is limited, and will result in a search error if the term is too vague (an expansion error). Vagueness depends on the density of the known portion of the word. If a search results in an expansion error, more characters will be required in order to more uniquely identify the desired terms. For example, a search on c* will likely result in a term expansion error.
- An asterisk may be used inside a string of characters. For example, a search for h*genous will return results that contain terms such as homogenous and heterogenous.
- Asterisks may not be used as the beginning of a term. It will result in an error.
- The question mark (?) is used as a single-character wildcard for term
expansion.
- A single character has to be found in the place of the wildcard. For example, a search for water? will return results that contain terms such as waters, but will not return water, waterflooding, watersheding.
- If a search results in an expansion error, more characters will be required in order to more uniquely identify the desired terms. For example, a search for w? will likely result in a term expansion error.
- A question mark may be used inside a string of characters. For example, a search for w?nd will return results that contain terms such as wind and wand.
- Question marks may not be used as the beginning of a term. It will result in an error.
- More than one single-character wildcard may be used in the same search. However, this may cause a slower return of the results than searching with only one single-character wildcard.
Phrase/Adjacent Term Searching
- You may wish to search for exact character strings or phrases. This is known as a literal search and provides the same functionality as an adjacency operator. Phrases (adjacent terms) can be searched for by using double quotes in the easy or advanced search screen. For example, a search for "wastewater treatment" will return results that contain the term "wastewater" immediately followed by the term "treatment". Note that double quotes are not necessary when searching phrases on the "Federated Search" page.
- Wildcard operators inside a phrase will operate as wildcards. For example, a search on "high performance comput*" will return results that contain phrases such as "high performance computing" and "high performance computer".
- Phrases can be joined together using Boolean operators. For example, a search for "solar cell" OR "photovoltaic cell" will return results that contain either the phrase "solar cell" or the phrase "photovoltaic cell".
- An inexact phrase search can be performed by surrounding a phrase in quotation marks followed by a tilde (~) and an integer: "phrase"~#. The integer represents the number of unrelated words that may be present between the two search terms. For example, a search for "biofuel ethanol"~2 would return results that contain the following: "biofuel ethanol", "ethanol biofuel", "biofuel * ethanol", and "biofuel ** ethanol", where the asterisk represents the unrelated words.
- Searches for "biofuel ethanol"~2 will return results that contain both biofuel and ethanol. However, the relevance is increased for results where the two terms are closer together.
- The integer for an inexact phrase search must be at least 2 to permit reordering of phrases. An integer of 0 would return exact matches.
Boolean
- Boolean operators can be used to broaden or narrow your queries. Operators are used to indicate logical relationships between the descriptive terms that make up your query. Operators are case insensitive. Operators can be used within a single query box when using the "advanced search" or the "easy search" page.
- Operators available for use in this system are AND, OR, and
NOT.
- AND: narrows your search. All records/full text retrieved must contain all of the search terms you specify. Searches for radioactive AND wastes will return results that contain both radioactive and wastes. Searches using the Boolean operator AND must have two conditions on which to operate. Therefore a search for AND wastes will return results that contain only wastes because the word AND is not indexed. Multiple words entered as search terms without a Boolean Operator must all be contained in the field(s) searched in order to be returned in the search results. In other words, an implicit AND is added between each term. For example, a search on the "title" for radioactive wastes will return results that contain both radioactive and wastes somewhere in the title. It is not necessary for the terms to be adjacent.
- OR: broadens your search. All records/full text retrieved must contain at least one of the search terms you specify. Searches for metals OR alloys will return results containing either metals or alloys or both terms. Searches using the Boolean operator OR must have two conditions on which to operate. Therefore a search for OR alloys will return results that contain only alloys because the word OR is not indexed.
- NOT: narrows your search by allowing you to exclude specific search terms. Searches for wastes NOT radioactive will return results that contain wastes and do not contain radioactive. Searches using the Boolean operator NOT must have two conditions on which to operate. Therefore a search for NOT radioactive will return results that contain only radioactive because the word NOT is a Boolean operator.
- Order of Operation
- The default order of operations (precedence) for all supported Boolean Operators is NEAR, NOT, AND, OR.
- Unless overridden by use of parenthesis, the default order of operations will be used. Expressions are evaluated in order from left to right according to the precedence of their operators (or order of operation). Operators with higher precedence are applied first. Operators of equal precedence, i.e. the same operator used more than once, are applied in order of their appearance in the expression from left to right.
- A search for fossil NOT oil OR coal will return results
that either
- contain the term fossil and do not contain the term oil or
- that contain the term coal.
- A search for fossil NOT (oil OR coal) will return results that contain fossil and do not contain either oil nor coal. This is an example of overriding the default order of operations by using parenthesis.
- If you receive an error message related to Boolean searching, please check your use of operators, parenthesis and/or quotation marks.
Show Another Field
From the "search results" page, you can show an additional field in the results listing by choosing the desired field in the "show" drop-down box on clicking on the "go" button. The additional fields available to show are OSTI Identifier, Report Number, DOE Contract Number, Other Identifier Number, Document Type, Specific Type, Resource Relation, Research Organization, Sponsoring Organization, Subject, Related Subject, Publisher, Country, Language, Format, Rights, Source, Availability, Entry Date, or DOI.
Find More By This Author
In the "search results" page and the "bibliographic citation" page, each author is hyperlinked so that, when selected, a search is conducted for the selected author. The author search is the same as if you had conducted a phrase search on "creator/author" from the "advanced search" screen. For example, if you select the "Smith, John" hyperlink, it will provide you with the same search results as when you conduct an "advanced search" on "creator/author" for "Smith, John".
EndNote Library Downloads
- In order to utilize the EndNote capability, you will need to have already downloaded and installed the EndNote software and have already created a Library. (In EndNote, access the File Menu, select New).
- To download using EndNote, select the hyperlink 'Download as EndNote' on the Bibliographic Citation page for the item(s) of interest. Selecting this hyperlink will provide you with the option to save as an EndNote Library file (.enl extension) directly to your own storage space.
- You may choose to have the EndNote Import File access your EndNote software directly, in which case EndNote will prompt you for your Library file, then a dialog box to select an import format will appear. Select "EndNote Import Format" and select OK. Your selected citation will be previewed and added into your EndNote library.
- If you choose to save the downloaded citations file (default file name is "citations.enw"), you may open the EndNote software, open your Library, then select the "Import" icon to add the selected citations to your Library.
Printer-friendly Version
From the "search results" page and the "bibliographic citation" page, you can select and print a "printer-friendly version" of the current page by clicking on that option.
Refine Your Search
From the "search results" page, you can refine your search by clicking the "refine search" button which takes you to the "advanced search" page. This page will reflect your current search strategy which you can modify and re-submit as a refined search.
Alert Tips
- In order to receive e-mail alerts, you must have an individual user name and password so that we know the e-mail address for sending the alerts. You will also have to logon using your individual user account to set up, update, or inactivate any alerts. If you do not have an individual user account, you can request one by using the registration form. For more information about registering, see the "registration/user profile" section of "help". After you logon to ETDEWEB, you can access alerts from the main top menu or from the "search results" screen.
- You can create a new alert by providing the required information on the "alert services" page. Provide an alert name that will help you identify the alert and click the enable alert flag to receive e-mail alerts. Also set the frequency of the alert notifications to weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, quarterly, or annually using the drop-down box. Decide if you want the e-mails whether there is new data for the search or not and set the flag accordingly for "send email if no new data?". Next enter the search terms and limits for the search. You may also set if you want new and/or updated citations. After all information is provided for the alert, click on the "save alert" button.
- You may update an alert or disable it by accessing the "alert services" page and selecting your alert from the "select alert" drop down box. Then, click the go button. Your alert details will be displayed and can be updated, disabled, and saved. You may also run your alert immediately by clicking on the "run alert" button.

Federated Search Tips
- Full-text searching is available when supported as the default by the individual database.
- You will know a PDF is available when you see the PDF icon
- "And" and "Or" operators are generally supported (for example, searching metals or alloys returns results with either or both words).
- There's no need to use quotes for phrases. We phrase-search by default.
- Wildcard character * (asterisk) is supported in several, but not all, databases (for example, ecolog* will find both ecological and ecology).
- Search is not case sensitive (for example, SOLAR, Solar, and solar will produce the same results).
Registration/User Profile
The following fields define the "User Registration" and "Update Profile" pages. Initial values are assigned when a system account is set up, but can be changed by the user at any time by selecting "Update Profile" when logged on from the menu. Required fields are in red and marked with an asterisk.
Be sure to click on the "register" button at the bottom of the "User Registration" page or the "update" button at the bottom of "Update Profile" page when you are finished. Your changes will then be posted.
The fields on the "User Registration" and "User Profile" pages are:
User Name - User name must be unique to the system so please choose carefully. A message will appear after you submit if the user name is not available for you to use. Simply choose another user name. Maximum of 30 characters is allowed. The user name cannot be changed by the user after the account is set up. User name is case-sensitive.
Password & Confirm Password [PASSWORD EXAMPLE: Pass12worD] - Password should contain a minimum of 8 non-blank characters with at least 2 numbers. Password is case-sensitive. The user can change his or her password at any time through the User Profile screen. To change the password, type in the new password and confirm, and it will be effective the next time you log into the system.
EMail - Email must be provided so the administrator can notify you when your registration is approved. If you do not have email, please put "None" in the field and you will be notified via regular mail when approved.
Registration Country - When registering, registration country must be selected. Registration country cannot be changed by the user after the account is set up.
The remaining personal information fields can be changed at any time through the Update Profile page.

For optimal performance, Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.x or higher is recommended.
ETDEWEB supports download management capabilities with the byte range request enhancement implemented. Download manager software often improves the speed and reliability of downloads for the end user by offering scheduled downloads, "resume" support, and error recovery for downloads. Some browsers, such as Netscape 7.x, have built-in download managers. Other download managers are free or commercial and include packages such as Download Accelerator Plus, FlashGet, GetRight, WGet, and many others.
A PDF viewer plug-in is strongly recommended for displaying most full text documents. The PDF viewer should be loaded as a browser plug-in to view individual pages in PDF format. If the Adobe Acrobat Reader is used, version 3.01 or later is recommended. The Adobe Acrobat Reader software can be downloaded for use at this site: http://www.adobe.com/prodindex/acrobat/readstep.html. Other viewers and an unzip utility are also recommended for displaying other full text documents not available in PDF.
