NASA STENNIS SPACE CENTER HOSTS MINORITY UNIVERSITY GRANTS AND CONTRACTS WORKSHOP HANCOCK COUNTY, Miss. — Representatives from minority institutions from Mississippi, Louisiana and as far away as Puerto Rico participated in a two-day workshop at NASA Stennis Space Center (SSC) on June 23-24. The workshop focused on NASA grants and contract opportunities that are available to minority institutions.
SSC Director Rear Adm. Thomas Q. Donaldson V, USN (Ret.) and Manager for the NASA Office of External Affairs at SSC, Pam Covington, welcomed the group and expressed their desire to form more partnerships with minority institutions.
During the conference, participants received overviews of primary SSC mission areas, discussed research needs with NASA personnel, learned more about agency research and educational opportunities, toured SSC facilities and participated in a mini-workshop for effective government award administration.
“This workshop provided a wonderful opportunity for us to share about our propulsion testing, Earth science missions and research needs so that we can build new and stronger collaborations with these minority institutions,” said NASA SSC University Affairs Officer Dr. Ramona Travis.
Dr. Josephine Barnes, director of the Office of Research and Special Projects at Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville, Ill., conducted a grants administration workshop that was sponsored by NASA and the United Negro College Fund – Special Programs Corporation.
Rita Presley and Pamala Heard, representatives from the Office of Sponsored Programs at Jackson State University (JSU) attended the workshop to see what kinds of opportunities are available for JSU faculty and staff and to see how JSU’s capabilities relate to NASA needs.
“We are excited about becoming more involved with Stennis activities,” Presley said. “We look forward to having more interaction with NASA.”
“We are looking forward to developing new and innovative relationships with these institutions as we embark on the agency’s exciting new path of space exploration in the coming years,” Travis said.
