Advanced Earth Observing Satellite (ADEOS) Malfunction -- Press Release

July 1st ,1997 NASDA HQ Tokyo, Japan

Regarding the ADEOS satellite which has stopped to reply to any command from the ground, NASDA tried to confirm the status of the satellite by getting telemetry data at Kiruna Tracking Station in Sweden at 20:41 and 21:20 (JST) in June 30, and at Masuda, Katsuura and Okinawa Space Tracking Station at 21:02 and 22:39 (JST) in June 30. However, we have not received any data from the ADEOS. Into consideration this situation, we stopped to send further emergency commands from now on.

At this time, we are continuing to analyze telemetry data which was acquired up to the accident. As the result of that investigation, we confirmed a decreasing tendency since June 27 on electrical generation of the solar arrayed panel. We also confirmed some telemetry data regarding solar arrayed paddle's temperature which shows unusual value since June 23. We are trying to get detailed information of that phenomenon.

To clarify the cause of the accident, we are going to observe the figure of the ADEOS satellite on the orbit by optical observation from the land, further, trying to cooperate with NASA to observe it, too.
