Effingham, Illinois Receives $1.2 million in Federal Funds

Effingham, Ill. -- U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) Director of Public Affairs Ms. Kelly A. O’Brien and U.S. Representative John Shimkus today formally presented a $1.2 million EDA investment check to the city of Effingham, Ill. The investment will provide infrastructure needed to extend the Outer Belt West transportation corridor. The investment is expected to create 250 jobs and generate $18.5 million in private investment.

“America’s competitiveness and innovation flourish in vibrant, economically growing communities that are creating jobs and opportunities,” said O’Brien. “Effingham’s Outer Belt West transportation corridor project will bring a new FedEx Freight distribution facility and other commercial development and jobs to the region.”

“I am proud the EDA recognized the need for this federal investment in Effingham, and the team effort of the city of Effingham, the South Central Regional Planning Commission, and FedEx that made this project a reality,” said U.S. Representative John Shimkus. “I believe it is investment that will pay off by spurring further development and expanding job opportunities, even beyond FedEx, at a time when our economy faces many challenges.”

EDA serves as a venture capital resource to meet the economic development needs of distressed communities throughout the United States. EDA’s mission is to lead the federal economic development agenda by promoting innovation and competitiveness, preparing American regions for growth and success in the worldwide economy.
