F1. Why can't I scroll down far enough to see the key on the METAR viewer? I can see a partial key, but can't scroll any further.

First, ensure that you have selected a region from the METAR Regional Plot, the legend will not appear otherwise.

There are several other possible causes:

Your monitor is set to a very low resolution (which makes the window very large, large type, etc.). If that is the case, (Windows 95 users) from the 'Control Panel' double click on "Display" and select the 'Settings' tab, make the appropriate changes (increase the resolution).

Another alternative is to manipulate the size of the window. Drag the title bar and move the window to the top of the monitor screen. Now drag the bottom edge of the window to shrink the window opening. This will not change the size of the imagery, just how much is viewed in the window. You may then reposition the window by dragging the title bar.

Lastly, some monitors allow you to change the horizontal or vertical centering or shrink the entire viewable area. Older monitors have external 'wheel' type rotating controls usually placed under the front or on either side of the monitor face frame. These are easy to bump and accidentally change. Newer monitors have an on-screen menu that may or may not be used in conjunction with external toggle switches to make changes.

F2. How can I get a larger view of the ADDS IFR screen? It is hard to read the identifiers and % of cloud cover, the printer doesn't do much better.

Try to open the frame in a new window (see FAQ A5b for tips and techniques), and/or try using the JAVA Applet to roam and zoom the image as necessary.

As far as the printing goes, to depict as much useful data on a limited size plot is usually a judgement call. We try to constrain ourselves to 8.5" x ll" as that is the most common paper size. The current browsers do not print images wider than 8.5" correctly.

F3. Why is the print so small on your products?

The font size is controlled by your browser. Assuming that you have Netscape 3.0 or higher (our page displays better with this browser), go to the 'Edit' menu and select 'Preferences.' Open up the 'Appearance' Category and select 'Fonts.' Change the 'Fixed Width Font' Size (and font type if desired) to a larger number. Try increasing the setting until you get to a size/font that you like.

F4. I have an HP 722 printer, how can I get your charts to print correctly?

The ideal way is to use postscript, if you have access. If so, download the image to a file, and then print from that file. However, there are so many variants in printers and settings that it is difficult to specifically address your problem without looking at your entire set-up.

You need to "tinker" with your printer settings on your computer to allow for landscape printing. 11" x 17" paper will also work best. By the way, screen resolution is an adjustable parameter on most systems that often will also effect the print size.

Spend some time looking at printer and page set-ups. The size of the images on the WEB are carefully designed to effect a compromise between resolution, color, ease of downloading, and ease of printing.

F5. How do I get the AWC page to come up when I initially log on to the Internet?

If you are using Netscape: Go to the "Edit" pull-down menu and select 'Preferences.' Click or highlight 'Navigator.' In the "Navigator starts with" box select the 'Home page' radio button. In the "Home page" box enter 'http://aviationweather.gov' (without the quote marks) in the 'Location:' bar or (start this process from the AWC Homepage) click 'Use Current Page,' it will type the AWC URL for you.

If you are using Internet Explorer: Go to the "View" pull-down menu and select 'Internet options.' Select the 'General' tab. In the "Home page" box enter 'http://aviationweather.gov' (without the quote marks) in the Address: bar or (start this process from the AWC Homepage) click 'Use Current,' it will type the AWC URL for you.

Earlier versions of the above browsers may have a different menu structure, we recommend downloading the most current version, they are free.

F6. Why can't I get the POSTSCRIPT (8.5x11) file of the new VOR plotting chart to download to disk or view on the screen?

There is also another alternative, the PDF image. Download the free ADOBE Acrobat Reader in order to view/print this file. Find out more: reading and printing PDF Get Acrobat Reader

The GIF image is not recommended for printing although it works well for on-screen viewing.

The Postscript image is only useful if you have a printer that interprets postscript, you will not be able to view postscript on screen. You should be able to download the file, the prints are extremely high quality. When you select an object that has a ".ps" extension, your browser cannot view it on screen, so it should ask what to do (save to disk). If you are not getting this question, your browser has been set to handle files with a ".ps" extension in an incorrect manner.

There are many varieties of settings/browsers/computers that have to be considered. Assume, for the sake of brevity, that you are using NETSCAPE 3.0 or higher (Internet Explorer uses the same kind of logic, but with different terminology and visual appearance). Click on the "Edit" pull-down menu in the upper left and select "Preferences." Click the +/- next to the "Navigator" category to expose the subcategory "Applications" and then select it. Under Description scroll down until you find 'Postscript Document' and highlight. If unable to find this you might need to go through the list until you find the ".ps" extension. You may simply Remove this file type. Otherwise, click on Edit and click the radio button next to Save to Disk followed by 'OK' twice.

The above process allows the user to specify what application will be opened or used with each file type extension. Removing the association will cause a browser to ask what to do with that file type. If you accidentally select the wrong application, the browser will continue to make the wrong association until you complete the above procedure. Don't be afraid of removing the wrong file type or association, it will merely mean that you will have to make a new choice the next time that file type is used.

F7. Can you increase the font size or bring up the resoulution of the Low Level SIGWX Charts?

see FAQ D12b

F8. The dark grey marbleized background reduces the contrast with the text so much that it's very hard to read. Why not just go for a plain white background?

It is a compromise (we have found white to be too stark) and judging from the majority of our feedback is acceptable. Some of our text pages use a plain gray background which can be modified by the individual user. Assuming that you have Netscape 3.0 or higher (our page displays better with it) , go to the 'Edit' menu and select 'Preferences.' Open up the 'Appearance' Category and select 'Colors.' In the "Colors" box either check 'Use Windows colors' or click on the 'background' tab and select the desired color. It may be that your font size is too small, see FAQ F3 for tips and techniques on changing font sizes.

F9. Once I've visited a page and go 'back' the link is no longer visible, why?

Try moving your cursor to the position where the link should appear. The cursor should change to a hand with the pointing finger if it detects a link available. If you get the hand then click with the left mouse button. This should take you to the desired page.

It is possible that the color selected for a 'visited' link is not showing on your browser or does not have enough contrast with the background to be visible to your eyes. For example, the color of 'visited' links shows up as dark purple on my browser settings. Assuming that you have Netscape 3.0 or higher (our page displays better with it), go to the 'Edit' menu and select 'Preferences.' Open up the 'Appearance' Category and select 'Colors.' In the "Links" box ensure that 'Underline links' is checked. Click on the 'Visited Links:' color tab and select a color that will be visible to you in contrast to our gray marbleized background.

If none of the above works then I suggest bookmarking the link and going there directly when you need to see the page.

F10. How can I enable cookies in my browser?

Netscape:
Click on the 'Edit' pull down menu, highlight and click 'Preferences.' Under the 'Category:' box click on 'Advanced.' In the right lower box labeled 'Cookies' select the 'Accept all cookies' or 'Accept only cookies that get sent back to the originating server' radio button. Click the "OK" box.

Internet Explorer:
The default setting allows the creation of cookies. If this has been changed, click on the 'Tools' pull down menu, highlight and click 'Internet Options...' Click on the 'Security' tab and click on the 'Custom Level...' box. Scroll down to 'Cookies' and under both options select the 'Enable' radio button. Click the "OK" box and then click the next "OK" box.
