CBP Announces Support for National Gang Intelligence Center

(10/20/2008)
U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner W. Ralph Basham met today with representatives from the Department of Justice’s National Gang Intelligence Center to announce CBP’s newly established membership with the center to help combat gang activity.

CBP will add a whole new dimension to the center’s work by providing actionable intelligence about gang activity with a nexus to the U.S. border.

“CBP has to be an intelligence driven organization,” said Commissioner Basham. “We have to provide information to front line officers and agents to protect the nation from criminal gangs.”

CBP will staff the center, located in Northern Virginia, with representatives from the offices of intelligence and operations coordination, field operations, and Border Patrol.

The NGIC, established by Congress in 2005, is a multi-agency effort that integrates the gang intelligence assets of federal, state, local and tribal law enforcement entities.

Agencies that are participating in the Center include CBP, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the National Drug Intelligence Center, Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, U.S. Marshals Service and the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

The mission of the NGIC is to support law enforcement agencies through timely and accurate information sharing and strategic/tactical analysis of law enforcement information focusing on the growth, migration and criminal activities of gangs that pose a significant threat to communities throughout the United States.

CBP’s work with the NGIC will also enhance our capabilities to gain operational control of our nation’s borders.
