The Pandorf’s new EQIP-funded manure management system integrates well into their cattle feeding operation.  Thanks to outstanding design work by NRCS field engineer Jay Rezek, a system has been installed that is completely gravity flow from the feedlots through two settling basins to the membrane lined holding pond.

A new series of three 2008 Farm Bill banner stands (84" x 31") is available from LANDCARE.  To reserve an exhibit, send an email to landcare@usda.gov or call Alan Benge at 888-LANDCARE (888-526-3227 ext. 104) and let him know the title of the exhibit and the dates you need the exhibit (date of arrival and date it will be shipped back).

The Minnesota Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Land Information Systems (LIS) Consortium recently presented Minnesota NRCS GIS Specialist Banette Kritzky with this year’s Polaris Leadership Award at the 2008 GIS/LIS conference in Rochester, Minnesota.  The honor is awarded by peers in the GIS community for leadership and significant contributions to the Minnesota GIS/LIS Consortium and the statewide GIS community.

With livestock operations getting larger and, in many cases, concentrating in certain areas of the country, manure management is not the only concern for these facilities.  Coping with the animal mortalities, whether from catastrophic or from normal operational losses has emerged as a concern as well.  Gasification has now been added to some of the other traditional methods of mortality management such as rendering, incineration, and composting.
