Martin Luther King Jr. Cup

On February 25, 2007 the U.S. Embassy’s American Cultural Center (ACC) held its fourth annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Cup men’s basketball tournament in the city of Maradi. The tournament was part of a series of U.S. Embassy events sponsored in February in celebration of Black History Month and was organized in partnership with the Nigerien National Basketball Federation. The local team from Maradi defeated the men’s squad from Diffa in eastern Niger to take home the MLK cup.

Audience participation exceeded two hundred and fifty, and included the governor of Maradi, the traditional chief of the region, and local political, religious and community leaders. The event marked the continuation of ongoing and very popular efforts to reach the region’s youth and key local leaders through cooperative sporting events.
