Products

TES data are distributed through the Atmospheric Science Data Center at NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC ASDC), and are directly accessible via the Langley Data Center's (TES Data) page. Additionally, all of the datasets for instruments aboard the Aura spacecraft are available from NASA's Earth Observing System Data Gateway (EDG).

List of TES Data Products

TES run data lists with date/time and geo-locations:

The TES standard data products are for global survey observations only, conducted in a one-day-on / one-day-off mode. During the "off" days, special observations can be scheduled. The following tables list the TES standard products.

Level 1B || Level 2 || Level 3

Level 1B Products

TES Level 1B data contain radiometric calibrated spectral radiances and their corresponding noise equivalent spectral radiances (NESR). The geolocation, quality and some engineering data are also provided. Each L1B data file contains data from a single TES orbit starting from the South Pole Apex.

A separate product file is produced for each different atmospheric species. Each of these files is referred to an Earth Science Data Type (ESDT). The following table consists of the eight unique nadir and limb files based on the focal plane for an orbit.

TES-Aura_L1B-Limb_FP2A_rrun id-oorbit number_version id.h5

TES-Aura_L1B-Limb_FP2B_rrun id-oorbit number_version id.h5

The filename for a L1B standard product is constructed using the following template:

TES-Aura_L1B-view_FPFP_r<run id>-o<orbit number>_<version id>.h5

  • view determines whether the file uses the Nadir or Limb view
  • FP represents the focal plane (1A,1B,2A,2B)
  • run id represents the ten-digit run identification number
  • orbit number represents the starting five-digit Absolute Orbit number, which is the same as the Aura orbit number at the time of the South Pole apex crossing
  • version id represents the version identification number, which is used to keep track of file format changes.
  • .h5 extension denotes the use of HDF 5 format.

See the Data Files page for a brief description of TES L1B nadir and limb data files.

Level 2 Products [Return to top]

In general, TES Level 2 data contain retrieved species (or temperature) profiles at the observation targets and the estimated errors. The geolocation, quality and some other data (e.g., surface characteristics for nadir observations) are also provided. The following table lists TES Level 2 standard products.

Species H2O O3 CH4 CO HNO3 HDO AtmT
Nadir Swath Object X X X X - X X
Limb Swath Object X X - - X X X

L2 modeled spectra are evaluated using radiative transfer modeling algorithms. The process, referred to as retrieval, compares observed spectra to the modeled spectra and iteratively updates the atmospheric parameters.

L2 standard product files include information for one molecular species (or temperature) for an entire global survey or special observation run. A global survey consists of a maximum of 16 consecutive orbits. Nadir and limb observations are in separate L2 files, and a single ancillary file is composed of data that are common to both nadir and limb files.

The filename for a L2 standard product is constructed using the following template:

TES-Aura_L2-species-view_rrun id_version id.he5

  • species refers to which molecule or temperature the file uses
  • view determines whether the file uses the Nadir or Limb view
  • run id represents the ten-digit run identification number
  • version id represents the version identification number, which is used to keep track of file format changes
  • .he5 extension denotes the use of HDF EOS 5 format

See the Data Files page for a brief description of TES L2 nadir, limb, and ancillary data files.

Level 3 Products [Return to top]

The objective of the TES Science Data Processing L3 subsystem is to interpolate the L2 atmospheric profiles collected in a Global Survey onto a global grid uniform in latitude and longitude that will provide a 3-D representation of the distribution of atmospheric gasses. Daily and monthly averages of L2 profiles and browse images will also be provided.

The L3 standard data products are composed of L3 HDF-EOS grid data.

A separate product file is produced for each different atmospheric species. Each of these files is referred to an Earth Science Data Type (ESDT). TES obtains data in two basic observation modes: Limb or Nadir. The product file may contain, in separate folders, limb data, nadir data, or both folders may be present.

Specific to L3 processing are the terms "Daily" and "Monthly" representing the approximate time coverage of the L3 products. However the input data granules to the L3 process will be complete Global Surveys; in other words a Global Survey will not be split in relation to time when input to the L3 processes even if they exceed the usual understood meanings of a day or month.

More specifically:

  • Daily L3 products represent a single Global Survey (approximately 26 hours)
  • Monthly L3 products represent Global Surveys that are initiated within that calendar month.

The data granules defined for L3 standard products are "daily" and "monthly". L3 data is provided at uniform grids in latitude and longitude and at selected pressure levels.

The table below illustrates the molecular species and temperature reported for L2 nadir and limb retrievals.

Species AtmT H20 HDO O3 CO CH4 HNO3
Nadir Grid Objects x x x x x x -
Limb Grid Objects x x x x - - x

The L3 standard product files are implemented using the HDF-EOS 5 file format. HDF-EOS 5 files have a default extension of ".he5". The ECS Local Granule ID (filename) for a L3 standard product is constructed using the following template:
