East Brunswick High School
Takes Top Prize at the
NJ Regional Science Bowl

NJ Regional Science Bowl Winner 2005 Plainsboro, New Jersey -- On Saturday, February 26, the East Brunswick High School team won first place at the U.S. Department of Energy's Regional Science Bowl. The competition took place at the DOE Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) in Plainsboro. East Brunswick was among 32 teams who competed in the Jeopardy!-like tournament in which all the categories are disciplines of science. The participants answered multiple-choice or short-answer questions in biology; chemistry; physics; astronomy; mathematics; and general, earth, and computer sciences. Each team included four students, a student alternate, and a teacher who served as an advisor and coach. As the top winner of the regional competition, the East Brunswick High School team will receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., to participate in the Fifteenth Annual National Science Bowl® from April 28 to May 2, 2005.

PPPL, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy and managed by Princeton University, is a collaborative national center for science and innovation leading to an attractive fusion energy source. Fusion is the process that powers the sun and the stars. In the interior of stars, matter is converted into energy by the fusion, or joining, of the nuclei of light atoms to form heavier elements. At PPPL, physicists use a magnetic field to confine a hot ionized gas, or plasma, as the fuel for fusion energy production. Scientists hope eventually to use fusion energy for the generation of electricity.

The Laboratory is on Princeton's James Forrestal Campus, off U.S. Route 1 in Plainsboro, New Jersey.
