MEMORANDUM FOR: Distribution E

FROM: John H. Ward
                        Chief, Production Management Branch

Subject: Changes to the NWS Production Suite

1. The NWS Telecommunications Operations Center (TOC) is currently under a moratorium on changes to operational data flow, while they replace their legacy mainframe system and the Andrews File System (AFS).  During the moratorium no new NCEP model data will be added to TOC FTP server (tgftp.nws.noaa.gov), AWIPS, or NOAAPORT.  Limited resources on the NCEP FTP server (ftpprd.ncep.noaa.gov) will not permit it to be utilized as an interim source of new data during the moratorium. Further details on the impact of the moratorium will be provided as they become available.

2.  Efforts to mitigate the delays in delivery of NCEP model output to the TOC FTP server (tgftp.nws.noaa.gov) began on Thursday, 1 September. The work is expected to be completed during the next week.

The following crisis items were implemented this past week:

    758. SCRIPT - IBM Job JRTGSST. (Katz, NP2). Script exrtgsst.sh.sms. katrina generates the real-time, high-resolution global SST (RTG_SST) analysis and the regional SST fields used by the Eta model. The script is being changed so that the source of satellite data is determined by script variable "CTYPE", which applies to all seven days of data used in the current analysis and satellite bias removal. "CTYPE" has been set to "SSTNS" to use NESDIS retrievals in the absence of the Navy retrievals. When the Navy retrievals become available once more, "CTYPE" will be reset to "SSTNVH". Done at 19Z on 30 August.

    759. SCRIPT - IBM Job JGDAS_SSTOI. (Stokes, NP23). Script JGDAS_SSTOI.sms.dcs produces the OI SST analysis. The script has been modified to force the use of AVHRR SST retrievals from NESDIS instead of retrievals from the US Navy. (Navy retrievals are temporarily unavailable.) Done at 12Z on 1 September.

The following items will be implemented at 12Z on Tuesday, 6 September:

    760. SCRIPT - IBM Job jgdas_prep_post. (Jones, NP12). New script exsat_counts.sh.sms executes global_satcounts.sh which extracts satellite data counts from the data dump status files.

    761. SCRIPT - IBM Job jgdas_prep_post. (Jones, NP12). New script global_satcounts.sh reads the GDAS data dump status files, extracts daily satellite data counts, and saves the extracted data count information into appropriate monthly files for end-of-the-current month display on the NCEP web site.

    762. SCRIPT - IBM Job jgdas_prep_post. (Jones, NP12). New script month_name.sh is a utility that returns the name/abbreviation of the month specified by the month number.

    763. DATA FILES - IBM Jobs GFSMOS_METAR_FCST_00, 12, GFSMOS_METAR_EXTFCST_00, 12, GFSMOS_COOPRFCMESO_FCST_00, 12, GFSMOS_COOPRFCMESO_EXTFCST_00, 12. (Cosgrove, OST22). These input files control the post-processing of the MOS forecasts for the METAR, cooperative observer, and mesowest sites. The files are being changed to add relative humidity processing to them. This is preparatory work for the gridded MOS relative humidity guidance.

The following item will be implemented at 12Z on Wednesday, 7 September:

    764. SCRIPT - IBM Job jgfsens_PP_post_CC. (Cooke, NP11). The exsemble.sh script generates GRIB files with a specific list of fields from the GFS ensemble products. The script is being modified to add 2 meter Relative Humidity values to the output products.

The following data flow crisis items were implemented this past week:

    765. DATAFLOW - Systems Blue/White. (Freeman, NP11). The parsing.tbl defines actions to be taken in response to an alert. The scp.tbl defines files to be ftp'd to remote files. The parsing.tbl and the scp.tbl are being modified to send two additional dump files to dmznas for NASA: GOES NESDIS-processed 11x17 field-of-view imager and DMSP/SSM-I - processed brightness temperatures. Done at 12Z on 7 August.

    766. DATAFLOW - Systems tgsv10/11. (Cooke, NP11). The parsing.tbl defines actions to be taken in response to an alert. The parsing.tbl has been modified to handle the switch between tgsv10 and tgsv11 when GFS BUFR files are being received. Done at 12Z on 29 August.

    767. DATAFLOW - Systems tgsv10/11. (Cooke, NP11). The parsing.tbl defines actions to be taken in response to an alert. The parsing.tbl is being updated to stop sending NCF_STREAM alerts to system Blue. Done at 15Z on 30 August.

The following data flow items will be implemented at 12Z on Tuesday, 6 September:

   768. DATAFLOW - System ncosrv. (Freeman, NP11). The parsing table defines actions to be taken in response to an alert. The table is being modified to send all VGFHPC alerts to HFO's host, public.hfo.noaa.gov.

   769. DATAFLOW - System ncosrv. (Freeman, NP11). The parsing.tbl defines actions to be taken in response to an alert. The cleanlist defines the retention time for each file. The parsing.tbl is being modified to accept VAAC VGF and TEXT alerts from SAB, and send alerts to AWC and HFO. The cleanlist is being modified to keep 20 of each file type.

The following data flow items will be implemented at 12Z on Wednesday, 7 September:

   770. DATAFLOW - Systems Blue/White. (Freeman, NP11). The dbn_util.pl utilities package contains the utility routines for the DBNet daemons. The dbn_util.pl is being replaced with the most recent baseline version (DBNet 4.3.1).

   771. DATAFLOW - Systems Blue/White. (Cooke, NP11). The scour.conf file is used by LDM to determine what cleanup should be performed. The file is being modified to keep 2 days of data instead of 10 in the /dcom/us007003/ldmdata/obs/surface/mesonet directory.
