Laredo inspectors seize 3 loads of narcotics worth more than $3 million

On October 4, Customs inspectors seized two marijuana loads. The largest seizure was made at the Gateway to the Americas Bridge where a 1995 Chevy Suburban was referred to secondary. Canine "Rex" alerted to the gas tank and inspectors found 165 pounds of marijuana in the tank with an estimated street value of $165,000. The driver was arrested on federal charges of importation and possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance.

The other seizure that day involved two Laredo juveniles. A Customs inspector at the Lincoln-Juarez Bridge referred a 1994 Dodge pickup truck driven by a 15-year-old male juvenile for secondary examination. A 14-year-old male juvenile was a passenger in the vehicle. Inspectors discovered anomalies in the gas tank area and found 150 pounds of marijuana in the tank. The marijuana has an estimated street value of $150,000. Both juveniles were arrested and turned over to Texas Department of Public Safety troopers for prosecution on state drug possession charges.

On October 6, Customs inspectors at the Lincoln-Juarez Bridge pulled a bus over for secondary noting discrepancies in the rear wall of the restroom area. Canine "Visa" alerted to the area where inspectors discovered 187 pounds of cocaine in three gym bags. The cocaine has an estimated street value of $3 million. The bus was seized, no arrests were made, but the investigation continues.

Customs agents in high-speed chase
A suspected drug smuggler is in custody in Mexico after allegedly leading Customs agents on a high-speed chase in a tractor-trailer loaded with marijuana. After swerving at agents trying to stop the vehicle, the suspect abandoned the tractor-trailer about 75 yards north of the international border and ran into Mexico. Marijuana-filled bundles were discovered weighing 2,300 pounds with an estimated street value of more than $2 million.
