For large cities, the percent of all homicides committed by intimates began at 12.9 in 1976 and decreased to 5.6 in 1994. After 1994, the rate increased, reaching 6.8 in 2000, before falling to a low of 5.8 in 2005.

For small cities, the percent of all homicides committed by intimates began at 18.5 in 1976 and decreased to 9.9 in 1996. After 1996, the rate rose, reaching 12.6 in 2001. After 2001, it fluctuates with a low of 10.6 as it decreases to 11.3 in 2005.

For suburban areas, the percent of all homicides committed by intimates began at 17.2 in 1976 and dropped to 12.4 in 1995. Then the rate rose to 15.2 in 1998, before falling, reaching 13.0 in 2005.

For rural areas, the percent of all homicides committed by intimates began at 19.4 in 1976 and fluctuates with a high of 19.9 as it decreases to 15.2 in 1995. The rate then increased to 20.5 in 2000. Then it fluctuates with a low of 14.0 as it decreases to 17.8 in 2005.
