Abstract: The GEOnet Names
Server (GNS) provides access to the National Imagery and Mapping Agency's
(NIMA) database of foreign geographic feature names. Approximately 20,000 of
the database's 3.5 million features are updated monthly with names information
approved by the U.S. Board on
Geographic Names (US BGN). For space considerations on nearly all of
the Global GIS tiles, many of the fields were deleted. In some cases the
Full_name field was also shorten. On the DVD volume the Full_name field was
copied to a shorten Gaz_name field. And the Full_name field was processed to
replace some of the unrecognizable diacritical symbols.

the user's responsibility to assess the accuracy and completeness of a data-set
extracted from the data base and to determine if these are sufficient for the
purposes to which the data-set would be applied.

Abstract: Note: For space
consideration on most Global GIS volumes we removed the points with attributes
"HLL", "STM", "STMI" in the file gaz_othr.shp
(Hill names and Stream names). In a couple instances the entire "GAZATTEER
MISCELLANEOUS" (gaz_othr.shp) dataset was removed.
