Visualizing and Manipulating GMI Model Output

by Bryan Duncan (301-614-5994)

Software to Process netCDF Files

1. netCDF (network Comman Data Form)
This FREE software is complex, but you really only need the "ncdump" command.

a) To view the header of a netCDF file, type "ncdump -h filename.nc"
b) To print the values of one variable, type "ncdump -v variable filename.nc"

2. NCO (netCDF Operator)
This FREE software allows the user to manipulate data in netCDF (see above) files. Each operator is a stand-alone, command line program executed at the shell level like, for example, ls or mkdir. This software complements netCDF. I find this software powerful, but it has a bit of a learning curve attached to it. The users guide is thick, but very helpful. You can post questions to the NCO help desk.

Software to Visualize netCDF Files

1. VCDAT (Visual Climate Data Analysis Tools)
This FREE visualization software is a relatively easy-to-use package that doesn't require IDL. Send your questions to the CDAT help desk.

2. IDL Readers
Contact Susan Strahan (301-614-5995) for easy to use IDL readers created specifically for GMI output.
