Guide to Life at Fermilab

Recreation

On-Site Recreation
The Fermilab Recreation Office (http://fnalpubs.fnal.gov/benedept/recreation/recreation.html) is located on the 15th floor of Wilson Hall, West side (WH15W), at X2548. They are open 8:30 AM to 5 PM Monday through Friday. They handle membership for the Recreational Facility, Pool, and Children's Summer Day Camp - as well as answering more general questions about recreation at Fermilab.

Memberships to these resources are only available to Fermilab employees, visiting researchers, eligible contractors, and their immediate families.

Recreational Facilities
The Recreational Facility is located at 16 Potawatomi in the Fermilab Village (X4761). It includes a multi-purpose gymnasium and an indoor basketball court that is used for tae-kwon-do classes as well as tennis and volleyball), an aerobics/exercise room, a weight room, and men's and women's locker rooms. There are weekly aerobics classes. It was built with a grant from the Universities Research Association.

Membership is required to use the Facility, available on an individual basis only and non-transferable. Yearly membership is defined to start on October 1 and end on September 30. 2000-2001 rates are listed below. Call Jean Guyer in the Recreation Office at X2548 to confirm, as rates are subject to change.

Regular Yearly Membership:????.. $70 per year 

Student Yearly Membership: ????..$40 per year (visiting graduate students only) 

Summer Employee Membership: ???$40 per summer 

Temporary Monthly Membership: ??..$20 per month (maximum 3 months) 

Membership may be canceled for disruptive or destructive behavior, or for allowing use of your member ID card by non-members. Renewed memberships only may be purchased through the mail by sending an application form and a check payable to Fermilab to M.S. 126. Swimming Pool
The Fermilab outdoor swimming pool is located behind the Kuhn Barn on Sauk Road in the Village. Dressing rooms, lockers, and shower facilities are available and are located adjacent to the pool in the lower level of Kuhn Barn.

2000-2001 membership rates are listed below. Call Jean Guyer in the Recreation Office at x2548 to confirm, as rates are subject to change.

Children age 2 and under do not require a pool tag. Guest are welcome but not exceed five permember.

The pool will be open full time no later than two weeks after Memorial Day. Prior to that time, it may be open only on weekends for family swimming. From mid-August until Labor Day weekend the pool schedule will be based on lifeguard availability (watch for notices posted at the pool or call x3119). The pool season ends on Labor Day. The schedule follows:

Weekdays: ??.11:30AM-1PM adult-only lap swimming 1PM-8PM family swimming (lifeguard on duty)

Weekends: ??.12PM-7PM family swimming (lifeguard on duty)

Holidays: ???12PM-5PM family swimming (lifeguard on duty)

All other times the pool is closed - no swimming is allowed. The pool will also close for rain, thunder, lightning, or other severe weather - or for outdoor temperatures of 20 degrees Celsius or less (70 degrees Fahrenheit). Call X3119 or X2548 for status.

Swimming instruction for children will be offered in two five-week sessions on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Beginners lessons are held from 10:45-11:30 AM; and intermediate lessons from 10-10:45 AM. The fee will be $20 per child per session. For registration information, call X2548.

Class size is limited to a first-come, first-serve basis. Classes may be cancelled due to weather conditions (as above), to be rescheduled if time permits. For more information see http://fnalpubs.fnal.gov/benedept/recreation/pool.html.

Other Facilities
Racquetball and squash may be played in the court located in the Anderson Barn, in the Village behind Sauk Circle. The single court is more appropriate to playing squash than racquetball and is not in great shape. To gain access, you should submit a key request form to the Recreation Office at WH15W. Reservation sheets are posted at the court. A dressing room is available.

Canoes can be rented through the Recreation Office at a cost of $5 a day, which includes paddles and life jackets. Prior reservations and payment must be made. Canoes are licensed and may be taken off site. On-site canoeing is available on the village lakes only.

Three outdoor Tennis courts are located behind Kuhn Barn in the Village. Nets are put up in the spring. Reservation sheets are located on the Barn near the pool entrance.

Two sand Volleyball courts are available and located behind the swimming pool. There is league play there during the summer (see leagues below), but use is otherwise on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Also in the area behind Kuhn barn there is a Softball diamond, basketball court, and a soccer field.

Users'Center
The Users' Center, at 10 Che Che Pinqua in the Fermilab Village, is open Monday through Friday from 5:00 PM until midnight. The Center has a bar, ping pong, pool, cards, and chess and checkers. You'll also find a color television set with VCR, a grand piano, and a small library.

Vending and Laundry Building
The Vending area, the house located at 18 Sauk in the Fermilab Village, houses a number of useful on-site facilities:

Vending: Soda and candy machines dispense salty and sugary pleasures for your enjoyment.

Laundry: Five washers and five dryers are available. The current prices are $1 per load for the washers, and 75 cents per load for the dryers.

There is a change machinehere as well.

Mail Boxes: All the mail boxes for houses and dorms on site are located here.

Piano Room: There is a small piano room available in the vending area. You can request a key for this room from the Users Office (X3111).

Clubs
Amateur Radio Club: Dave Peterson X3073. The Amateur Radio Club welcomes anyone interested in Ham radio or short wave listening. The club operates a UHF repeater on Wilson Hall and a complete HF and VHF-FM station at site 56. Meetings are held monthly and are open to anyone issued a Fermilab ID. Barnstormers Model Airplane Club: Jim Zagel X4076. The Model Airplane club fosters interest in building and operating radio-controlled models. (http://www.fnal.gov/orgs/barnclub/welcome.html).

Bridge Club: Stefan Vander Brink X5001. Providing a place and opportunity to play bridge as a form of entertainment. Hold annual tournaments.

Chess Club: Irwin Gaines X4022. Provides opportunities for casual chess games and participation in organized team play within the Chicago Industrial Chess League.

Fermilab Singers: Joy Hathaway X3649. The Fermilab choir provides an opportunity for people to meet, sing together and learn new music selections. (http://www.fnal.gov/orgs/choir/).

Folk Club: Lynn Garren X2061. Sponsors monthly barn dances to promote and preserve traditional square and contra dancing.

Garden Club: Don Goloskie X2277. Open to persons who are interested in gardening under well-maintained, ecologically sound conditions.

Indian Creek Riding Club: Judy Nichols X3989. Boarding stable and riding club for horses.

Rocket Club: Dave Capista X2369. Fermilab Rocket club promotes an interest in amateur rocketry and fosters activity in amateur aeronautics. The club has established an on-site flying field where members conduct group launches.

Creative Writers Club: Bruce Worthel, X8663, worthel@fnal.gov. The Fermilab Creative Writers Club exists to support, encourage and advance the personal writing of its member authors. The main focus of the club is review and comment on member authors' works of: fiction and/or poetry and/or drama and/or essays. (http://fnalpubs.fnal.gov/benedept/recreation/cwc.htm).

Events
Listings of events from the Arts Series, Film Society, Folk Dancing, Lecture Series, etc. can all be accessed through the Fermilab events page located at http://www.fnal.gov/faw/events.html.

The Fermilab Arts Series features Saturday evening performances each month of internationally acclaimed dance, theater, comedy, chamber music, jazz, and folk music ensembles. Ticket can be reserved at the reception desk of Wilson Hall, or by calling x2787 (ARTS). Note that graduate students can get tickets at half price if bought prior to the show.

The Lecture Series hosts distinguished guests from many disciplines. You can obtain information and tickets at the reception desk in the atrium of Wilson Hall.

Fermilab's International Film Society offers international, feature, and documentary films, on two Fridays each month. You don't need to make reservations or buy tickets in advance, but there is a nominal charge at the door.

The Art Gallery on the second floor of Wilson Hall offers bimonthly exhibits of paintings, photographs and sculpture, ranging from high-tech to ethnic. Fermilab invites the public to view these lively and varied exhibits seven days a week, during daytime hours, and users are welcome to view anytime. Please note the restrictions in effect.

Sports Leagues
To participate in the various sports leagues, call Jean Guyer at X2548 for the name of the current league representative. Leagues are announced in FermiNews and in posters around the lab. Participation in leagues held in the Recreation Facility requires a current gym membership.

Basketball: Games are held in the Recreational Facility. Summer league begins in May and winter league in October. (http://fn781a.fnal.gov/~kushnir/basketball/basketball.html).

Bowling: Tuesday night league begins play in September at Fairlanes in N. Aurora. Wednesday night league begins play in September at Bowling Green. For more information, call Dale Miller at X3875.

Coed 14'' Softball: Games held at the softball field on Monday and Wednesday beginning in May.

Dart League: Contact Wayne Johnson, X3190 for more information.

Golf: Tuesday night Fox Valley League, Tuesday night Prestbury League, Wednesday night Fox Valley League, Wednesday night St. Andrews League.

Tennis Singles: Winter league is held in the Recreational Facility and summer league at the outdoor courts. Monday through Saturday, starting dates and times vary.

Tennis Doubles: Winter league is held in the Recreational Facility and summer league at the outdoor courts, on Sundays from 4-8 PM. Starting dates and times vary.

Racquetball/Squash: Fermilab Squash and Racquetball court is located in Anderson Barn, the upper floor of the red barn in Fermilab's village behind Sauk Circle. To gain access to the Anderson Barn, a key request form must be submitted to the Recreation Office, WH15W. Reservation sheets are posted at the court. A dressing room is available.

Soccer: Winter league is held in the Recreational Facility and Summer league at the outdoor soccer field. Games are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Winter league begins in October, summer league varies. (http://www-td/sfpage/soccer/soccer.html).

Volleyball: Competitive Winter (http://www-d0.fnal.gov/~gallas/fnalvb/fnalvb.html) league is held in the Recreational Facility on Monday beginning in October and at the outdoor courts in May. Recreational league is held outdoors beginning in May. Days and times vary.

Film Development
Fermilab offers the convenience of film developing through the Sundance Photo Developing Company. The film drop off box is located on the ground floor, west side of Wilson Hall. For regular developing, film dropped off by 2 PM can be picked up the next day (2 days max.) after 3:30 PM. Many types of photo finishing services are available. Please refer to the binder located at the drop off box for services, photo finishing times and special order forms or stickers. Photos can be picked up in the Recreation Office, WH15W.

  • Make checks payable to Sundance Photo. NO CASH ACCEPTED
  • Check or money order must be in envelope at time of developing

    Off-Site Recreation
    Of course, being near a large Metropolis has its benefits. Some recreational activities not associated with Fermilab are listed below, for when you want to get away.

    Chicago Sport and Social Club: (773) 883-9596

    This club offers volleyball, football, soccer, basketball, etc. as well as social events including parties, trips, and tournaments, which vary with the season. Volleyball has varying levels of play, from recreational to competitive, and they offer summer beach and winter indoor. The football program offers coed touch, men's flag, and coed flag leagues for roughly $550/team, with a similar format for basketball and soccer.

    This Chicago organization offers summer beach leagues on North Ave. beach and winter indoor leagues in Lincoln Park, with levels ranging from recreational to competitive. Teams for men's, women's, and coed beach teams may have 2 players/team or 4 players/team, while the winter indoor teams have 6 players/team. Note: the fee per team is on the order of $350 with at least six on the team. Granted, this is more expensive than the Fermi league, but play is better and with different people. Winter leagues have paid refs.

    Local club totally devoted to volleyball, with great facilities and equipment. The leagues are all indoor, with skill levels ranging from elite to intermediate, with the fee being about $250/team for 6 people. The facility is very nice, and the quality of play here is very high.
