From: CARL OSS [osscarl1@msn.com] Sent: Friday, September 01, 2006 6:24 PM To: Dockets, FDA Subject: experience with mercury fillings My name is Carl Oss. I am a 43 year old man. I live at 4453 S Beech Way in Morrison. Colorado. I became concerned about mercury fillings when I noticed a metallic taste in my mouth while brushing my teeth about 2 years ago. The toothpaste I was using had zinc in it but no amount of rinsing seemed to get rid of the taste. My face broke out in boils that same day. I began to think about an experiment I had done years ago in high school where we discovered two dissimilar metals in an acid solution create a battery and the metals dissolve into the solution. Well, I'm no rocket scientist but I recognized that this was what was occuring in my mouth. This supposedly stable "amalgam" used to fill my teeth was clearly releasing toxins into my body. I began to research the subject of mercury fillings. I searched online and discovered article after article and study after study that strongly indicated potential health concerns involved with placing mercury of any form or amount in ones mouth for any amount of time, much less for life! How in the world (I thought) could the EPA forbid the disposal of mercury in a landfill but the ADA allow placing it in ones mouth? I thought back to the first breakout of "acne" I had when I was young and sure enough it had closely followed my first (mercury) fillings. I then began to wonder how many other health problems or physical issues could have been being caused by this toxic substance I'd had in my mouth for 25 years. The more I read the more it became evident to me that this couldn't be a situation that the ADA was unaware of. This was and is a situation where tha ADA has been covering up and ignoring, whereby negligently placing at risk the citizens of this country. In fact, I learned that there had been dentists who had lost their lisences due to their bringing these issues to light. Dr. Hal Huggins is one who I have tremendous respect for and is unfortunately in this category. Now I was ready to look into how I could have my mercury fillings removed safely and completely without suffering more ill effects in the process. I interviewed several dentists in my area and shared the information I had collected on the subject. I had purchased a copy of Dr. Huggins' protocol for dental revisions, and shared this with prospective dentists. I was quite surprised to find some very disparate viewpoints, from apathetic to emphatic, advising me to not worry or to have this substance out of my mouth as soon as possible. It was also interesting to learn that the dentists who expressed concern about the use of amalgam had had theirs removed and wouldn't place it in their family members teeth either. In fact they would not even offer it to their patients as a low cost filling material. Those with concerns were very careful to explain that their practices could suffer harm if it became evident to the ADA that they were casting doubt about the safety of amalgam fillings. After having chosen a dentist that I was confident would do the job as close to Dr. Huggins' protocol as possible and acquiring the credit to pay for the procedures since insurance (foolishly) disallows it. I had my 4 fillings replaced with a substance that my body was non reactive to. I was $2500.00 further in debt than when I started but I found the "rosacia" I had suffered from cleared up right away. The "acne" disapeared as well. I also noticed increased physical endurance while riding my bicycle and just working. It has been about 8 months and I am still realizing new improvements. My cognition and concentration are better. My moods are more stable and light. I am so convinced that I had been suffering from mercury poisoning that I purchased one copy of Dr. Huggins' book "Uninformed Consent" for each of my siblings and my parents. I am uphauled at the state of the regulatory agencies in this country. We citizens pay for these entities to protect our interests. Instead our health and our lives are knowingly placed at risk. Not only that, we are paying the ADA to censor morally responsible dentists when they express concerns to their patients. The EPA has done many many studies on the effects of mercury exposure on humans. Why don't they share their knowledge with the FDA and the ADA and if they do then why are the FDA and the ADA still playing ignorant? Furthermore, why isn't the ADA doing their own comprehensive studies to investigate the alleged health concerns they are most surely aware of concerning mercury exposure? I sincerely hope my personal experiences and concerns I've shared in this letter will be considered by those who read it. I have incurred considerable (health and monetary) expense due to what appears to be the blatant negligence of our governmental regulatory agencies. Please do not continue this travesty. Emphatically, Carl Oss
