Congressman Adam Smith's Statement on the JSF Contract

October 26, 2001

"Today, the Pentagon announced that it awarded the Lockheed Martin Corporation the contract for developing and building approximately 3,000 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) warplanes for the Air Force, Navy and Marines. While I am disappointed that the Boeing Company was not selected for this contract, I remain hopeful that the Company will serve as a significant part of the JSF team. I believe that Boeing’s involvement is crucial not only to Washington State but to the nation’s industrial base and our national security.

During decades of work with the Pentagon, Boeing has an unparalleled track record. The Boeing resume includes such fixtures as the F-18 Super Hornet, the C-17, the C-40, unmanned combat vehicles, and the new Boeing 767 tankers, which are ready to replace several hundred tankers in the aging Air Force fleet. The Boeing Company’s contribution to our national security and to the superiority of our weapons systems cannot be overstated.

Through the course of the JSF competition, Boeing has developed a vast array of skills and capabilities for the engineering, development and production this aircraft. I know that their world class team and formidable intellectual capital will remain a vital asset to our nation’s military and I hope they serve as a partner with Lockheed Martin in the JSF program.

As a Member of the House Armed Services Committee, I will continue to work to provide our servicemen and women with the very best weapons and technologies in the world. I also remain committed to the thousands of Boeing workers in Washington State and will fight hard to ensure that Boeing is given every consideration as a partner in the production team."
