Acting Commissioner presides over the 2005 Annual Awards Ceremony

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Acting Commissioner Deborah J. Spero presided over the 2005 Commissioner’s Annual Awards ceremony at CBP headquarters in Washington, DC. Joining Ms. Spero were Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff; CBP Assistant Commissioner Jayson Ahern, Office of Field Operations; and Chief David Aguilar, Office of Border Patrol.

"This is an important day for all of us in U.S. Customs and Border Protection. It is a day when we recognize and honor excellence in public service,” said Acting Commissioner Spero. “The level of professionalism, the depth of commitment and the expertise of the men and women of CBP are impressive and extraordinary. Every day, you make a difference in the lives of millions of Americans.”

In all, 184 CBP employees were recognized for their exceptional initiative, innovation and professionalism. They represent the finest examples of CBP’s dedication to securing America’s borders and serving the public with vigilance, and integrity. Awards were presented in the categories of: Best Practices/Unification, CBP Ambassador, EEO/Diversity, Excellence in Mission Support, Exceptional Service, Innovation, Integrity, Law Enforcement Officer, Leadership, Meritorious Service Award for Valor, Professionalism, Supervisor of the Year, Top Blue Eagle, Top Humanitarian, Special Recognition, Top Unit Citation and Unsung Hero.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, Deputy Assistant Commissioner William Heffelfinger, Office of Field Operations, recounted the role played by over 700 CBP employees in the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. Several CBP employees -- representing those employees who were forward deployed as well as those employees at Headquarters and around the country who supported the Katrina relief efforts -- joined him on stage.
