Location ------------ The meetings will be centered around Mayer Hall on the Southern end of the UCSD campus. The various meetings on Friday are either in Mayer Hall or nearby in Galbraith Hall. On Saturday, the plenary meeting will be in Center Hall, Room 212. Directions (maps available at http://hephp1.ucsd.edu/seminars/dir.html) ------------- San Diego is serviced by Lindbergh International Airport. From Lindbergh airport, follow the signs to Interstate 5 freeway. Take Interstate 5 north, until the Gilman Drive exit. This is approximately 15 miles from the airport. Turn left on to Gilman (North), and follow all the way to the UCSD campus. As you enter campus there will be an information booth on your right - this is where parking information and campus maps can be found. The information booth is circled on the campus map. Parking is indicated with a P. The Physics Dept. is located in Mayer Hall (also circled). Registration --------------- Please begin by registering on Friday morning (8 - 9) with JOAN YAP in MAYER HALL RM. 3325. Sign up for lunch and dinner. We expect to charge a small fee to cover the cost of food. Parking ----------- There is no readily available off-campus parking near UCSD. When parking on campus, visitors must purchase a permit at the Visitors Information booth on Gilman Drive. Types of permits are: Weekdays: Rate is $6 (allows parking in yellow and green spaces only) Weekends: Rate is $3 (allows parking in red, yellow and green spaces, plus at meters) Computer Access --------------------- Computer terminals will be available in Mayer Hall, Room 3237 for logging in to remote sites using rlogin, telnet, ssh, etc. Enter the username "guest00" with the password "1technicolor". Evenings and weekends, when the doors are locked, the passcode is "1019193". For assistance, please call David Rabson at 822-0361. Coffee, lunch breaks and dinner --------------------------------------- To allow flexibility on Friday, we suggest "The Grove" just north of Mayer Hall for coffee breaks. It has good coffee, a nice selection of snacks, and a quiet outdoor place to discuss in small groups. It is the coolest place on campus, so bring a sweater. On Saturday, coffee will be provided outside the meeting room at 212 Center Hall in the morning and afternoon. Friday, box lunches will be set up in the patio area (main level) on the south side of Mayer Hall. A list of people who pre-selected by email will be posted by the registration site. Those who failed to pre-select will have some options available. Lunches on other days are available at the Grove, or at the Price Center (circled on the map). Dinner on Friday evening will be at 7:00 p.m. at a local restaurant. A list of other restaurants is provided at the end of this document. Hotel transportation ------------------------ [Note: The Residence Inn and Radisson are within walking distance of campus] Transportation has been arranged from the Radisson (to the Mayer Hall loading dock) for up to 15 people, leaving the hotel at 8:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. The shuttle will also pick people up from the loading dock at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, and 6 p.m. on Saturday. Transportation at other times can be arranged with the hotel when you arrive. The Inn at Torrey Pines has a sedan which can transport 4 people at a time. They leave every hour on the hour. Arrangements have been made for transportation to UCSD at 8 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, but you should be sure to confirm your requests at the front desk. There are a wide variety of specialty shops including DG Wills Second Hand Bookstore which has stacks of treasures and coffee for chatting and browsing. The choice of good restaurants is never ending and many have a nice view of the ocean. * Stephen Birch Aquarium-Museum - The Stephen Birch Aquarium-Museum is located on the campus of the University of California's Scripps Institution of Oceanography along the beautiful La Jolla coastline. View over 3000 colorful fishes from the cold waters of the Pacific Northwest to the tropical waters of Mexico and Indo-Pacific and explore the largest oceanographic exhibit in the United States. *Horton Plaza - Horton Plaza is a lovely unique shopping mall done in a very colorful decor. It is located in our newly renovated downtow-n area and has ample indoor parking. The stores are multi-leveled and all face onto an open-air plaza. The food concessions are on the upper level. The atmosphere and musical performances make it a very nice place for window shopping or just a quiet stroll. VIEWS *A beautiful spot for watching "the submarine races" is on top of Mt. Soledad above La Jolla. *Right on the beach in La Jolla is Coast Walk. Here one can have a scenic view of the tidepools, frisbee players, scuba divers and the Pacific ocean at its best. BEACHES *La Jolla Cove is in downtown La Jolla with a grassy area for picnicking. Also see VIEWS. *La Jolla Shores is right next to the Scripps Institute of Oceanography and has a grassy area (Kellogg Park) for picnics and BBQ'S. *Torrey Pines State Beach is a beautiful hiking park with trails all the way down to the beach. This is about one mile from UCSD and next to the Torrey Pines Golf Course. On the way to the park is the Glider Port (next to the Salk Institute), which offers a great view of hang gliders and the beach below the cliffs. WHOLE DAY ADVENTURES *San Diego Wild Animal Park - The San Diego Wild Animal Park is located just 30 miles northeast of UCSD. It is an entire preserve of wild animals with tours, shops and shows. The African motif adds to the jungle-like atmosphere. *Balboa Park - Balboa Park is located 20 miles south of La Jolla. Within the park area one can visit the San Diego Zoo, the Old Globe Theater, various museums and the Ruben H. Fleet Space Theater (exploration room for children). * Sea World - Sea World is considered by many to be one of America's finest marine parks and certainly one of the most popular and enchanting attractions of San Diego. Call 226-3901 for details. *Mission Bay - Mission Bay is 1o miles south of UCSD. There are no waves but are lots of windsurfers, sailors, waterskiers and swimmers. *Old Town - Old Town is a cluster of shops covering approximately 4 blocks. It is all in a mexican style and has lots of delicious restaurants and fun specialty stores. *Harbor Excursion - Harbor Excursion is a boat tour which travels around the San Diego Harbor.
