Abstract:
This data set consists of the 1978 National Wetlands Inventory (NWI) Habitat vector data that has been converted to a rasterized version. The original vector data were developed by photointerpreting 1978 false color infrared aerial photography (scale 1:20000), digitizing the maps and incorporating the digital data into the Louisiana Dept. of Natural Resources (DNR) Map Overlay and Statistical System (MOSS), a geographic information systems (GIS). The vector data (250 7.5' quadrangles) were then converted to raster to allow for all the quadrangles to be merged into one data set. The original attributes were aggregated into 15 Level One landcover categories that were developed by the Louisiana DNR's Coastal Management Division; this new aggregation of the Classification of Wetlands and Deep-Water Habitats of the United States (Cowardian, et al. 1979) simplifies the data for interpretation.
Purpose:
To provide a general landcover classification for interpretation on projects not requiring an intense level of detail. A DIRECT OVERLAY GIS ANALYSIS OF THE DATA WITH ANOTHER DATA SET OF THE SAME AREA SHOULD NOT BE PERFORMED - see use constraints below.

Use_Constraints:
Due to the processes used to create the original vector data set, do not overlay the data with another data set for the same area from a different time period. Obliqueness of the photography and its non correction will produce skew results. A GIS comparison cannot be used with confidence due to the mis-registration problems. Acknowledgement of the National Wetlands Research Center as a data source would be appreciated in products developed from these data, and such acknowledgement as is standard for citation and legal practices for data source is expected by users of this data. Sharing new data layers developed directly from these data would also be appreciated by NWRC staff. Users should be aware of that comparisons with other data sets for the same area from other time periods may be inaccurate due to inconsistencies resulting from changes in photo interpretation, mapping conventions, and digital processes over time. These data are not legal documents and are not to be used as such.

Vector to Raster Conversion - After the data were digitized and placed into the DNR's MOSS, the data were converted to raster for better habitat comparisons between the dates. The data were converted from the MOSS vector format to the MOSS cell format; the reformatting allows for the conversion from MOSS to ERDAS. The MOSS cell data, which were rasterized at a 25 meter cell size, were then converted into ERDAS cell format for comparisons.

An example of the forest class that would be representative of bottomland hardwoods is a fringing forest parallel to a natural distributary.
