== TOF MEETING - 17/06/1999 ========================================== I. Mechanical The 12 prototypes of the Aluminum blocks arrived yesterday. Now we can assemble a triplet of three bars. Progress has been made on the insides of the Al block assembly: - a drawing of the cap including the spring is complete, and a model has been assembled. Matthew will send Chuck the name of the company and part numbers from which we got sample springs (done). - Matthews drawing of the plastic piece that fits between the PMT and the base has been received and transcribed. Fermilab is ready to machine a few of these. Three will be machined to be installed on tubes at Penn. Delrin is agreed on as an acceptable material. There was some discussion of the method of attaching the cylindrical cover to the Delrin. Countersunk screws are difficult, instead a ball plunger has been suggested. Chuck also reported on the shelves. Welding 0.020 in Aluminum is a problem. We discussed if we should consider another mounting scheme. The present scheme is driven by the desire to have a TOF system that could be dismantled, if necessary, without extracting the COT. If we do not require that we can extract the bars without extracting the COT, other more practical mounting schemes (e.g. a scheme similar to the CLEO scheme) could be considered. Chuck agreed to discuss this further with RS and BK (neither were present at the meeting) and to come back with a couple of alternate designs. In principle we are ready to start machining CLEO bars. Whether to polish or not is still under debate, but the polishing will not be done on the AXIOM machine, so we do not have to decide this now. We do have to decide whether we want to cut bevels on all the bars now. We reminded ourselves that we were going to cut bevels on three Bicron bars only, then assemble a first triplet with our newly arrived Al blocks to make sure it holds together as expected. Chuck said this could be done next week and is high priority. Konstantin reported on a first attempt to measure the attenuation length of an unpolished three meter CDF TOF bar machined from a CLEO scintillator bar. He looks at the ratio of signals in PMTs on both ends of the bar as a function of the position of a trigger hodoscope along the bar. The slope of this ratio as a function of hodoscope position gives the attenuation length. He finds lambda_meas = 91 cm. Assuming this is due to the natural attenuation lambda_att of the scintillator (380 cm according to Bicron) and any attenuation due to reflections (lambda_refl) he finds lambda_ref = 120 cm using 1/lambda_meas = 1/lambda_att + 1/lambda_ref. This is not good. Next step is to - compare to a polished CDF TOF bar from a CLEO bar - compare to an uncut CLEO bar - compare to a production Bicron bar Sham also measured lambda with a different technique. He looks at the time difference between the signals arriving at the two ends of the bar using self-triggered cosmics. His preliminary result gives a similar number (perhaps a bit higher) to Konstantin's. II. Electronics We have communicated with PJW about the possibility of adding 26 more ADMEMs to our current order for timing measurements. It appears we can do this if we have the funds and if we decide soon. Twenty prototype printed circuit boards for the preamps have arrived. Two have been stuffed. They do not oscillate, but the risetime could be improved. We are working on this. MJ has prepared the laser for use in the magnet. MJ, JK, and a new graduate student (Denys Usynin) will probably come to FNAL next week to make some measurements (this is now moved to 7/1-7/2). MJ has used the laser to look at timing performance of the tubes. To our surprise, an old 16-stage tube with a Hamamatsu base showed a timing spread (difference between the laser pulse trigger and the PMT signal) of 35 psec using a 30 mV threshold on a single level discriminator. In contrast, the 19-stage tubes look worse: initially over 100 psec, then down to 50 psec after some struggle. This is due to the more gentle rise of the 19-stage pulse. Tests in the field next week will be especially important, since the 16-stage tubes have much less gain than the 19-stage tubes. MJ is preparing a note on these tests. We hope to get one of Fumi's 19-stage tubes with a Hamamatsu base for comparison at FNAL.back to summary list

This facilitates the design of the Mechanical parts and makes the installation simpler. To have a handle on the possible problems arrising from the fact that the signals from one bar are read out from different modules each crate will have one pair of PMTs which could be connected in a one sided readout. Therefore cables have to be forseen.back to summary list
