Christmas Tree on the Consulate

Christmas Tree Lighting With a Message
December 3, 2004. Consul General Duane Butcher welcomed 600 guests to the 53rd Christmas Tree Lighting Party at the Consulate. In his welcoming remarks Consul General Butcher countered press reports that the Consulate would close and focused on the theme of the evening, international educational exchange, announcing a scholarship for a high school stay in Chicago, Hamburg’s sister city.

Study USA Roadshow

“Study USA Roadshow” in Rostock
On November 24, 2004 the Universität Rostock, the internet portal Gallileus and the American Consulate General Hamburg invited all interested students to a panel discussion and workshops with several experts on USA study programs and opportunities: The events took place at the Wirtschafts- u. Sozialwissenschaftliche Fakultät of the Universität Rostock, Ulmenstr. 69.(more)


Consul for Public Affairs Mike Stevens speaking to students in Kiel

“Common Agenda” Discussed with Students in Kiel
November 18, 2004. Speaking to an overflow crowd of 190 students at Kiel University November 18, the Consul for Public Affairs Mike Stevens analyzed U.S. election results and stressed the common agenda that Europe and America have in dealing with pressing world problems. The talk, sponsored by Kiel’s German-American Institute the "Kennedy Infozentrum" and the school’s Student Union, drew questions about civil liberties in the U.S., and about Iran, Israel, and the Middle East.

Womens Club

54th Charity Bazaar of the German-American Women’s Club
November 15, 2004. Together with Hamburg’s Interior Minister Udo Nagel, Consul General Duane C. Butcher and his wife Nazilia opened the 54th “Charity-Bazaar” of the German-American Women’s Club. In his speech, Butcher emphasized the importance of this annual event, which over many decades has supported Hamburg’s children and young people in need. This year’s proceeds go to two local anti-violence projects. The “Charity Bazaar” was visited by 500 guests of all ages and is an ongoing success story of German and American women working together.

Crime Author Sara Paretsky

Best-selling mystery author gives reading at Consulate from her latest book
November 8, 2004. Writer Sara Paretsky, creator of the Chicago-based, popular V.I. Warshawski private-eye series, introduced her new novel Blacklist to an audience of 80 enthusiastic fans of crime fiction. Among the guests were teachers of English and American Studies, as well as representatives and supporters of the Hamburg-Chicago Sister Cities Program. Dr. Susan Winnett of the Universität Hamburg presented Ms. Paretsky.(more)

Post-Election Breakfast
November 3, 2004. More then 80 invited guests attended the post-election breakfast, which was hosted by the Bucerius Law School. The Consul for Public Affairs Michael G. Stevens chaired an election panel with Andreas Cichowicz (editor-in-chief, NDR Public Television) and Professor Dr. Cord Jakobeit (chairman of the Political Science Department of the University of Hamburg).(more)


Members of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce

Reception for Handelskammer Hamburg at the Consulate
October 26, 2004. More than 120 employees of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce attended a reception at the American Consulate General as part of their “Betriebsfest” (company party) tour through four consulates in Hamburg. Greeted by U.S. Commercial Service Officer James Finlay and his wife the guests were informed about the upcoming U.S. election. In their remarks James Finlay and the Chambers General Manager, Prof. Dr. Hans-Jörg Schmidt-Trenz, also praised the excellent cooperation and working relationship between the U.S Commercial Service and the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce.(more)

Die Amerikaner - Lecture by Andrea Böhm
October 1, 2004. Andrea Böhm, free lancing journalist in New York, read from her new book "Die Amerikaner" at the Amerikazentrum Hamburg.
In view of the upcoming presidential election, there is an increasing international focus on the USA. While important statements of American politicians are also reported on in Germany, the spectrum of political opinions of the American public is less well known here. Andrea Böhm has traveled extensively in the USA. Her insights into the societal changes of the last couple of years are the subject of her new book Die Amerikaner.

Youth Exchange Fair 2004 in Hamburg
September 24, 2004. More than 700 high school students, teachers and parents visited this year's Youth Exchange Fair of the Amerikazentrum Hamburg that Public Affairs Officer Michael Stevens opened. Twenty-five organizations that offer high school stays, au-pair stays and summer jobs and internship opportunities for young Germans had set up booths at the fair. Moreover, Matthew Victor, chief of the Consular Section of the U.S. embassy in Berlin, gave a presentation on visa issues and two educational experts lectured on high school exchange programs.

Group of School Leaders

School Principals from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Visit the Consulate
September 22, 2004. Eighteen principals of schools from Greifswald, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, were greeted by the Consul General Duane C. Butcher and met with the Consul for political and economic affairs, Robert K. Scott, for a lively discussion about German-American relations. How September 11 has affected thinking about security and international politics was a main theme of the discussion.

Independence Day Reception 2004
July 6, 2004. Consul General Susan Elbow said good-bye to Hamburg at this year's Independence Day Reception at the Rickmers building Atlantic in Neumühlen. Among the VIP guests were second mayor Schnieber-Jastram, president of the Hamburg parliament Röder and senator Dr. Freytag.
Ambassador Coats and Marsha Coats also came from Berlin to say how much Germany will miss her and stressing that "Hamburg adopted Susan as a daughter".

Former Consul Susan Elbow visits godchild Kandy on her first birthday
May 14, 2004. Consul General Susan Elbow presents Joachim Weinlig-Hagenbeck of the famous Hamburg zoo "Hagenbecks Tierpark" with a miniature elephant. She visited her godchild Kandy on the elephant's first birthday. Susan Elbow baptized elephant baby Kandy in 2003 with coconut milk.

April 29, 2004. The Consulate General Hamburg held its consulate day in Bremen. Consul General Susan Elbow met with politicians and journalists and participated in a discussion group with high school students. Featured services included educational exchanges information by the Amerikazentrum Hamburg, visa information, Amercian Citizen Services, business and trade information by the U.S. Commerical Service, and information products by the Information Resource Center.

Hamburg-America Dinner at the Kaisersaal of Hamburg's Town Hall
January 23, 2004. First Mayor of Hamburg Ole von Beust invited selected individuals to the Kaisersaal of Hamburg's town hall to a fundraising dinner supporting a unique German-American project, the Amerikazentrum Hamburg. Speakers were Consul General Susan Elbow and First Mayor Ole von Beust. Mr. Behrendt of Hapag Lloyd was awarded the Hamburg-America Friendship Prize and Dr. Robin Houcken of Axel Springer and his wife Daniela received the Chrysler Crossfire Prize.
