First Anniversary Of “Lincoln Corner” At International Islamic University

Islamabad - Lincoln Corner in Islamabad, which was established in the year 2006 at the International Islamic University library, completed its first year of service on Tuesday, June 5, 2007. U.S. Embassy in Islamabad which has established this “mini American Center” in several Urban Centers of the country, was represented at the anniversary celebrations at the Islamic University by the Acting Public Affairs Officer, Mr. T.J. Grubisha.

The Lincoln Corner in Islamabad was inaugurated by the Chairman, Higher Education Commission (HEC) Dr. Atta-ur-Rahman and the former U.S. Ambassador to Pakistan, Ryan C. Crocker on June 5, 2006 at the Central Library of the International Islamic University (IIU) Islamabad. Lincoln Corners are joint partnership projects between host institutions and the U.S. Embassy in Pakistan. They serve as reference libraries, information centers, and programming platform for anyone with an interest in learning more about the United States.

On its first Anniversary Mr. T.J. Grubisha, presented a book-collection, “Library of America” to the Lincoln Corner, Islamabad. These books were received by Prof. Dr. Abdul Khaliq Kazi, Dean of the Faculty of Usuluddin of the International Islamic University. On the occasion, he told the audience, "Although we are presenting books today, it is important to remember that this is just one resource the Lincoln Corner has to offer. The Corner has proven itself an effective venue for facilitating communication between our two cultures time and time again over the year and I know this will continue in the years to come."

In the last one year the Lincoln Corner Islamabad has proved itself a dynamic resource center and a good program platform not only for the IIU community but also for the youth and other communities of the twin cities. Ever since the opening of this corner, 14,318 visitors have been able to get access to latest books, popular magazines, educational DVDs, and online resources. Since its opening 1,732 people including a good number of youth and women have attended more than 40 programs like seminars, video shows, web chats, online research sessions, American speaker programs, discussions and exhibitions at the Lincoln Corner.

The Lincoln Corner at International Islamic University, Islamabad promoted friendship between the United States and Pakistan through multimedia resources, English language materials, information about studying in the U.S., cultural activities, and lectures on topics of interest to the people of the twin cities. Books, magazines, access to computers, internet, web-cam and DVDs at LC Islamabad offer a "window on America" and its people. This Corner is a place to read about America and to exchange views and opinions with Americans living in, or visiting Pakistan.
