RE: [Anjana] How did you prepare
for your job? what kind of training did you have to go through? What did
you have to study? Thanks.
I PREPARED BY WORKING HARD AND PAYING ATTENTION, TO DETAILS I HAD TO GO
THROUGH ABOUT 100 HRS OF TRAINING ON THE ARM SO I WOULD KNOW HOW THE ARM
WORKS AND HOW TO TEACH OTER ASTRONAUTS HOW TO DRIVE IT FOR FLIGHT. IT
TAKE A LOT OF MATH, ENGLISH AND MECHANICAL BACKGROUND

RE: [Mary] Hi, we are 22 fourth graders
from Friday Harbor Elementary on San Juan Island in Washington State.
We would like to know how long astronauts have to train with you to be
ready to go to space?
TO FLY THE ARM IN SPACE THEY TRAIN WITH US ABOUT 10 HOURS FOR EVERY 1
HOUR THEY SPEND ON THER EVA.

RE: [Brittany/Clisby] How old were
you when you started your job?
I WAS 33 YRS OLD WHEN I STARTED WORKING WITH ASTRONAUTS.

RE: [Charles] What kind of robotics
systems do you work on? What do they do?
THE ROBOTICS I WORK WITH IS THE ROBOT ARM THAT FLYS ON THE SPACE SHUTTLE,
EXCEPT OURS WORKS ON HYDROLICS. AND WE HAVE A NEW ARM FOR THE SPACE STATION.

THE ARMS THAT WE WORK WITH TRANSPORT THINGS FROM THE SPACE SHUTTLE TO
THE SPACE STATION.

RE: [DavidHamilton/JSC] TO FLY THE ARM IN SPACE THEY

EVA stands for extra vehicular activity, this means the time the astronauts
spend out side the shuttle.

RE: [MrsHillhouse] So paying attention
in math has had its rewards? Without it you couldn't be doing such exciting
work! My students are learning that math really does pay off!
In my type of work the arm runs completly on math in orbitor axes. With
out the math i would be lost and i use it in a lot of other things in
life.

Wow! we have a lot of terrific questions - more than enough to fill the
hour. Stand by as David answers as many as possible. Thanks for your patience.

RE: [Jenna/CMS] Did you know you
were going to be involved in the space program as a child? (Was it your
dream opportunity?)
I got to take a field trip when i was a small child and always dreamed
about working at NASA. It is most certainly a dream come true.

RE: [Calee] If you haven't ever been
in space yourself how do you know what to teach the astronauts?
I have never been in space myself, But I hope some day to go. As far as
knowing what to teach the astronaut we fly the robotic arm at the NBL
just like they do on flight.

RE: [Garreth] How does water relate
to space? Why is it so important to train in the water?
In the water we can simulate weightlesness, this lets the astronaut get
the feel of what it like in the space suit before he or she goes into
space.

RE: [Lauren/Clisby] What type of
student were you in 5th grade?
Average I did not like school very much but I did ok.

RE: [Alec] Have you or do you work
with the other countries involved in the International Space Station?
What have been some of your experiences with them?
Yes we work with a lot of the other countries and all of the people are
great, but some times it is hard to understand them

RE: [Tracy/CMS] What do you enjoy
most about your job?:)
I like flying the arm the most. Not many people in the world get to do
what i do, so it seems a whole lot more special.
[ DavidHamilton/JSC - 57 - 10:53:01

RE: [Cory] What is the arm that you
are referring to, what is its purpose, and how does it work?
The arm is the robotic arm on the space shuttle that deploys thing in
the cargo bay and helps the astronaut work on thigs in space.

RE: [MrSharack/JulietLongSchool] Hi,
we are 5th graders in Gales Ferry, Connecticut. How are astronauts able
to maintain a neutral buoyancy?
Once they are in the suit we weigh them out with led weights so the suit
is nutraly boyant. We can adjust the weighout at any time in the water.

RE: [Austin] Have you invented any
robotics that they have used in space?
No but you never know.

We're coming to the end of this chat. I know we will not be able to answer
all the questions we have. If he is willing, perhaps we can ask David
to return for another chat. We invite you to share your thought with us
on our NASA QuestChat Information Center: http://quest.nasa.gov/qchats

RE: [Paizley/Clisby] Hi,this is
Paizley and I would like to know how it feels to work with astronauts?
It is a great honnor, they are realy a bunch of nice people and its the
best job i have ever had.

RE: [MrSharack/JulietLongSchool] How
large is the NBL?
The NBL is the largest indoor pool in the world it is 202 feet long 102
feet wide and 40 feet deep. That comes out to 6.2 million gallons of water.

RE: [Mary] On your Bio sheet you
said your dream is to go into space. Have you asked your boss if you can
go into space? What do you think you will need to do to make your dream
come true? Thank you. (Fourth grader from FHES)
Be patient and work hard, I dont know if i will ever get to go, but i
will keep trying.

RE: [MrO/JCE] Do you plan on doing
this job for the rest of your life, or would you like to try your hand

do.

I personally would like to thank David for spending this time with us
and than all of our participants for their good question. We didn't get
to all, I know, and I hope we'll have another opportunity to learn more
about David's job at another time.
