IIP Speaker Program on Blogging and Civic Journalism Generates Interest at University Communication Departments and Journalist Associations

The U.S. Embassy Abu Dhabi and the U.S. Consulate General Dubai hosted IIP speakers Jeff Cole, Director of the USC Annenberg School for Communication, and Duy Linh Tu, Lecturer at the Columbia School for Journalism and Creative Director of Resolution Seven, from October 13 through 19. In a series of engagements at public universities and journalist associations, the speakers discussed internet trends, the future of journalism and digital media. The presentations provided a fascinating perspective of the on-line digital future. While the lecture series took place during Ramadan, there was considerable interest in the topic and the speakers reached wide cross-section of the journalist and media community in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah.

Duy Linh Tu’s hands-on workshops on creating internet blogs, their principal uses, video technology, editing software and applications to journalism met with great interest, as did Jeff Cole’s analysis of internet trends. The speaking engagements were particularly welcome in Dubai, the host of Media City, where the speakers participated in press interviews with Gulf News and Al Bayan, and in a call-in show on Dubai Eye. At a reception hosted by PAO Dubai Marion Ram, the speakers met with prominent Dubai television and print journalists from major papers and broadcast stations (CNN, Al Arabiya, Al An TV, Dubai TV, Al Bayan, Gulf News, Al Ittihad).

Highlights of the tour included a presentation at Etisalat Academy in Dubai, where Jeff Cole and Duy Linh Tu conducted a workshop with 14 journalists talking about digital trends and demonstrating cutting edge journalism technology. Etisalat is the UAE’s sole internet provider. Likewise, the speaking engagement at the University of Sharjah’s Multimedia Department drew a crowd of 60 faculty members and students. The speakers were received by the Vice Chancellor of the University, who showed the university’s appreciation by presenting a plaque.
