Abstract: This brochure, from the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA), provides an overview of celiac disease (CD), an autoimmune, digestive system disease characterized by intolerance to a wheat protein called gluten. Gluten is found primarily in wheat, barley, and rye but may also be in everyday products, including some medicines and vitamins. The brochure reviews the biology of CD and the role of the immune system. The brochure then outlines the typical symptoms of CD, diagnostic tests that confirm the disease, and treatment options, notably a gluten-free diet. Another section explains some of the complications people with CD, especially those who have gone undiagnosed for years, may experience. The details of a gluten-free diet are summarized and readers are encouraged to educate themselves about food labels and nutrition. A final section reiterates the basic information presented in the brochure. One illustration shows the organs of the digestive system labeled in a simple line drawing. Readers are referred to the AGA website at www.gastro.org/patient for more information about digestive health and to find a local AGA member physician. 3 figures.
