This is a quarterly meeting of the Extended Metadata Registry (XMDR) Project for a collaborative effort involving DOD, EPA, USGS, NCI, the Mayo Clinic, and other organizations to extend the semantics management capabilities of ISO/IEC 11179 metadata registries. The work focuses on extending the classification and terminology aspects specified in the ISO/IEC 11179 Metadata Registries family of standards, adapting and adopting useful emerging technologies for a prototype implementation that will be used for tests and demonstrations. It is intended to assure that the continuing development of the standard meets the needs of the collaborators. The participants, including program sponsors, will review progress, discuss possible technologies, and make plans for the coming quarter. The first day is devoted to presentations of related work and related technologies which may be used in the prototype implementation. The last day of the meeting (Thursday) will be an ad hoc liaison meeting of XMDR, ISO/IEC 11179 Parts 2 and 3, MMF, (both ISO/IEC JTC1/SC32/WG2 projects). and ODM Projects (ODM is an OMG project).

Detailed Agenda for XMDR Summer 2005 Meeting
The meeting will be held in the UC Berkeley Faculty Club, which is located at the east end of the campus. The meeting will be in the Seaborg Room room on the second floor at the west end of the building. The Seaborg Room is located directly above the Faculty Club Bar.
If driving you would enter off of Gayley Road on the small road just south of the Haas Business School (and north of the Law School). As you enter the campus you will see a round building on the left (Calvin Lab), Haas Business School on the right, and the Optometry School in front. As you go past the Business School and approach the Optometry School, turn north (right) and drive approximately 80 meters until the parking lot ends. The Faculty Club in located to the west of the parking lot approximately 10 meters. It is a cedar shingled building. Enter the Faculty Club and walk past the dining rooms toward the west end of the building where the reception desk is located. The Seaborg room is located up the nearby stairs on the second floor above the bar.

Site access to LBNL requires prior arrangements. Note however that we are meeting on UCB campus, not at LBNL. Contact Suzanne Stevenson via email smstevenson@lbl.gov or call her at 510-486-6586 if you need site access to LBNL.
The UCB Faculty Club is handicapped accessible and has handicapped accessible restrooms. However, the meeting will be held in the Seaborg Room on the second floor, without handicapped access. Contact us immediately if you need handicapped access.
Parking near campus is terrible. (There are probably 35K students and faculty on campus every day and only a few thousand parking spaces in/near campus.) Here are three options for parking.
Get a permit from the Faculty Club for an on-campus parking lot (which probably has an available parking spot).
You can follow the directions to the Faculty Club, and park in one of a couple 20 minute spaces marked "TFC". then go in to the front desk and get a parking permit for $12 per day. They will give you a permit and direct you to park in a parking facility that is less than a 10 minute walk away. Find directions to the Faculty Club at: UCB Faculty Club Directions Web Page
Note that the two temporary "TFC" parking spaces are often full, leaving you at risk while trying to get the permit at the front desk.
Go directly to an on-campus parking lot.
There are two campus owned parking facilities potentially available during the day (they fill up early). They are:
(Closest to Faculty Club) Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK) Student Union Garage Location: On Bancroft just below Telegraph. Located on the campus (right) side of Bancroft. Note that Bancroft is one-way from east to west in the vicinity of campus.

Park in a public parking lot in the city, near the campus
There are various public parking lots and facilities near campus and in downtown Berkeley. The list, below, includes municipal and privately owned parking lots and garages open to the public. Please consult signs for hours and fees prior to entering the facilities. These lots are a 10 to 20 minute walk away from the Faculty Club. Note that many of the city lots enforce parking regulations (including max. parking periods) 24 hours per day.
The public parking lots are located at:
Berkeley Way between Shattuck and Milvia | . |
Center Street near Shattuck | 2025 Center Street |
Allston Way near Shattuck | 2061 Allston Way |
Kittredge Street near Milvia | 2020 Kittredge Street |
Durant Avenue near Telegraph | 2450 Durant Avenue |
Bancroft Way near Bowditch | 2558 Bancroft Way |
Downtown Berkeley Map, Parking and Transit Info Note that up is is East on this map - not North as usual.
The closest major public parking garage is located at on the south side of Durant Ave. (1 block south of Bancroft Way) approximately 30 meters west of Telegraph Ave. Note that Durant Ave. is a one-way street eastbound. This garage is a concrete structure with red brick infill and bright orange structural steel bracing.
From the main Berkeley BART station exit via the rotunda. Cabs are located directly on Center Street adjoining the BART station. Campus shuttles to east campus can be found in front the Bank of America building diagonally across Center and Shattuck from the BART station. There is a nominal charge (50 cents?) for non-students. The shuttles run approx. every 10 minutes from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM. The campus shuttles will drop you at the Hearst Mining Circle. The UCB Faculty is approx. 1 block south from the bus stop - immediately south of Strawberry Creek. Do not board the LBNL shuttles - they do not go to the Faculty Club.
There is no workshop registration fee. LBNL is hosting the meeting.
Attendees are responsible for making their own hotel reservations !!!
This is nice, modern hotel located at the Berkeley Marina, about 15 min. drive from LBNL. DSL lines are available in some rooms, for $10/night extra. You probably need a car (or use a taxi) to stay here. Fourth Street shopping/dining district is nearby via shuttle/cab. To get to/from LBNL via public transit take the 51M AC Transit Bus to/from the marina (about 2 blocks south of the hotel) to the downtown Berkeley BART station and connect to the LBNL Hearst Ave. shuttle. The hotel has an on site restaurant. It is on the opposite side of town from LBNL and remote from downtown, campus, and Telegraph Ave. This was formerly the Berkeley Radisson. LBNL visitors generally seem to like the hotel, except for the distance to LBNL. See the reviews at Trip Advisor Site for Berkeley Doubletree Marina Hotel The hotel has an hourly shuttle to nearby locations (at least the BART Station).
This hotel is approx. 15 min away by car, it offers nice suites with free DSL lines. It is located next to Emery Bay Public Market (food court, books, movies) and across the tracks from the Emeryville Amtrak Station (there is a pedestrian bridge). You will probably need a car if you stay at the Woodfin. (See above about shuttle/taxi sharing.) LBNL visitors have liked this hotel, but recommend a rental car to get to LBNL/campus.
Participants may wish to stay at the UC Berkeley Faculty Club where we are meeting. This facility is available to the public and rates are somewhat more reasonable than other hotels in Berkeley. There is free wireless access to the Internet throughout most public areas of the Faculty Club, the Seaborg Room (where we will meet) and in most of the sleeping rooms. There are a limited number of rooms, some with private baths and some with shared baths. It is located at the east end of campus. There is no parking immediately at the Faculty Club, but some may be arranged some distance away. Taxi or airport shuttles can drop you off at the Faculty Club. You can walk to the LBNL Hearst Ave. shuttle stop at in front of Cory Hall or you can take the LBNL Bancroft shuttle at the East Entrance to campus. Ask directions at the desk.
The hotel is located in downtown Berkeley at the corner of Allston Way and Shattuck Ave, on the southwest corner. It is located one block south of the main Berkeley BART station and the LBNL Hearst Ave. shuttle stop. The hotel is now operated by Howard Johnson hotel chain. The hotel does NOT have DSL lines to the Internet. This is an older, spartan hotel. Its principal attractions are its location in downtown Berkeley and moderate prices.
This is a fairly new hotel, built in 2000, at the west end of University Ave (near San Pablo Ave. and US. 580). The rooms have a microwave and mini-refrigerator. Of particular note is that availability of free high-speed (DSL?) Internet connections. There is fairly frequent bus service on University Ave to downtown Berkeley, from which you can get a shuttle to LBNL or east side of the campus (The Faculty Club). You can walk to the upscale Fourth Street shopping / dining district just northwest of the hotel. Not as nice as the Doubletree, but cheaper and better transportation.
Located two blocks east of Telegraph Ave. on Durant Ave. this hotel is located a block south of the LBNL Bancroft Shuttle route, which only runs every half hour. The hotel is somewhat nicer, but more expensive than the Shattuck Hotel. BART is a short cab ride or 15 min. walk. NO DSL lines in the rooms. It is close to Telegraph Avenue (shopping and restaurants) and campus. It is a fairly short walk (7 min.) to the UCB Faculty Club.
San Francisco airport is located approx. 40 minutes southwest (off peak) of Berkeley. It is the principal airport for the Bay Area. United has the most flights. If flying nonstop from the East Coast, you will probably wind up at SFO. If flying nonstop from Europe or Asia you will undoubtedly land at SFO. Note that SFO now has BART service.
Both rental cars and shuttles are available at both SFO and Oakland airports. Shuttles to Berkeley run approx. $25 (to downtown Berkeley) $35 (to LBNL) from SFO, $20 (to downtown Berkeley) $27 (to LBNL) from Oakland airport. Consult the airport ground transportation web pages or see the discussion of BayPorter Express Shuttle below (a popular shuttle to Berkeley).
BART now runs to SFO and stops in downtown Berkeley. At SFO there is people mover (train) that runs around the various terminals to the SFO BART Station. To get you must go under down one floor(by elevator) from the baggage claim, under the road, into the parking garage and then up the elevator to the fifth floor of the parking garage - there is a station near each terminal. Get off at the BART station and take another elevator down to the platform. From SFO you will have to transfer once in downtown Oakland to a northbound Richmond train. Going to SFO you will need to transfer to a SFO bound train at McArthur station (i.e., take any southbound train from Berkeley). Taxi from SFO to downtown Berkeley (including tip) runs $60-65. You can also take a shuttle ($12) or taxi ($30) between SFO and the Embarcadero BART station in SF and then take BART to Berkeley. Transfer at 12 Street Station in Oakland to the Richmond train.
There is a (rather sluggish) AIR BART shuttle between the Oakland Airport and the Coliseum BART station ($2) or a taxi to BART ($8) or a taxi to downtown Berkeley ($42 including tip). If taking BART be sure to take the northbound Richmond train from Coliseum station to downtown Berkeley, or the southbound Fremont train from Berkeley to Coliseum.
If you need to get to the Faculty Club from the airport, many visitors to LBNL/campus have used the BayPorter Express Shuttle , which serves Berkeley directly from the San Francisco airport and rarely takes you other places to drop of people first. The BayPorter trip from the Oakland airport may stop for drop-offs in Oakland, before going to Berkeley, but it is still usually fast. It costs about $22 from SFO to Berkeley, plus tip, if you like.
No reservations are needed to take Bay Porter from the airport to the Faculty Club, a hotel, home, etc. Thus, there is no need to call BayPorter Shuttle to make advance reservations before you leave on your flight. Reservations are needed in the other direction, i.e., to have BayPorter pick you up from a hotel, home, etc. to take you to the airport.
BayPorter wants you to call them when you get in to the airport, but after you have collected your bags. Call 877-467-1800 or (877) 864-4000 and tell BayPorter that you are at the airport (specify the Oakland or San Francisco airport) and that you want to go to Berkeley. They will ask which airline you came in on and will tell you where to go to get picked up. (At SFO, you do not go up one floor to where most of the vans pick up people. You usually go to a small parking lot near the United baggage area--or another airline's baggage area). The van is GREEN and usually comes within 10 minutes.
You can also go to the BayPorter web site (see above) and make reservations online (for a slight discount).
Tell the driver that you want to go to the Faculty Club on the UC Berkeley Campus. Many drivers know where it is, but not all. I highly recommend that you print the directions to the Faculty Club. Find them at: Directions to UC Berkeley Faculty Club Note that the directions include the telephone number for the Faculty Club (510) 540-5678. The person at the front desk should be able to guide the driver to the Faculty Club, if the driver gets lost. It is a bit of a challenge to find the way.
Amtrak runs the Capitol Corridor Train between Sacramento and San Jose. You can transfer between Amtrak and BART at the Richmond station. Then get off at the downtown Berkeley BART station and follow directions for the LBNL shuttles, i.e., take the Hearst shuttle and transfer either at Euclid (to the Bancroft shuttle) or at Bldg. 65 (to the on site shuttle). Note that many of the Amtrak "trains" are actually buses (and get stuck in traffic). Many of trains (but not the buses) have accommodations for bicycles.
We will provide an XGA resolution video projector in the conference room. We will also provide an easel and a large paper tablet.
There will be power strips provided for all participants. The power plugs will be conventional U.S. 120V 3 prong (grounded) outlets.
The faculty club will provide one wireless access point (802.11b). We will supply you with the network SSID and password upon arrival. There will be no wired Ethernet ports or phone lines for users. Please bring your own 802.11b wireless access cards, as we will not provide them.
There are no plans at present to provide a printer.
Weather in Berkeley in mid-October is usually still warm, but could turn chilly. Rain is unusual in October. Evening / morning air temperatures will likely be between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius. Afternoon air temperatures will likely be between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius. Detailed forecasts are available at the following sites.
Visitors are advised of the several major traffic hazards in Berkeley near the campus. Drivers are warned of major construction projects along Hearst Ave (northern edge of campus) and Gayley Road (eastern edge of campus). Unannounced entry of large dump trucks and cement mixers onto these streets is common. There are also major construction projects in the southeast of campus.
Pedestrian safety is a major problem in Berkeley resulting in high rates of pedestrian injuries and fatalities. Pedestrians in Berkeley frequently cross streets without regard to oncoming traffic (or traffic lights). This occurs especially in the vicinity of the campus on Hearst Ave between Euclid Ave., along Gayley Road and on Bancroft Ave. The absence of adequate sidewalks at LBNL (and along portions of Hearst Ave.) often leads pedestrians (or joggers) to walk or run on the pavement.
There are also numerous bicyclists (many reckless and poorly lit) in Berkeley and at LBNL. Note that Gayley Road (especially), Centennial Drive and many LBNL roads are largely devoid of shoulders - expect to see bicyclists on the main road bed. Most (sane) bicyclists use flashing red LED lights at night.
More seriously (for drivers), there are numerous large construction trucks (cement trucks and dump trucks mostly) currently operating in the vicinity of campus due to extensive ongoing construction. Especially, note the heavy truck traffic on on Gayley Road, emerging from the east entrance to the UC Berkeley campus. These trucks often do not stop for pedestrians, bicyclists, or autos.
Also note that the city of Berkeley has a problem with motor vehicles running red lights and stop signs. Cameras are currently being installed at some intersections.
For medical emergencies at UC Berkeley dial 911 from a campus phone, or 510-642-3333 from a cell phone. For medical emergencies at LBNL dial extension 7911, The nearest hospital is Alta Bates Medical Center - Ashby Campus. Alta Bates has an emergency room and is located on Ashby Avenue just east of Telegraph Avenue. Trauma cases go to the trauma center at Highland Hospital approximately 20-30 minutes south of Berkeley (in an ambulance, with no traffic jam). The Kaiser Permanente Oakland Medical Center is a major hospital (with emergency room, but no trauma facility) located at MacArthur Blvd. and Broadway St. in Oakland, approx. 4 km south of LBNL.
There is a modest Walgren's drugstore diagonally across from the Shattuck Hotel at the northeast corner of Allston and Shattuck. They have a pharmacist during the day. There is a larger "natural" pharmacy, Elephant Pharmacy located at 1607 Shattuck (south of Andronico's) at the SE corner of Cedar Ave. Elephant Pharmacy has a larger selection and is open later. It is approx. 8 blocks north of Center and Shattuck. There is a 24 hours pharmacy, Walgren's, located at 51st and Telegraph in Oakland.
On Telegraph Avenue, there is a Rexall Drugstore located on the west side of Telegraph between Bancroft Ave. and Durant Ave.
There is a Safeway located on Shattuck Ave., between Vine and Rose Streets, approx. 10 blocks north of Center and Shattuck. There is an Andronico's located at Shattuck and Cedar, approx 8 blocks north of Center and Shattuck. It is an upscale grocery store, deli, and bakery. Both stores sell wines and liquor. Both stores are open until 11 PM. In the south campus area, there is an Andronico's on Telegraph Ave. about 2 blocks south of Dwight Way (i.e., 6 blocks south of Bancroft Ave.). It is also open until 11 PM. There is also a small market on Telegraph Ave. between Durant Ave. and Channing Way. South of campus there is an Andronico's located about 2 blocks below Dwight and Telegraph. If you are truly desperate, there is a Safeway's at the corner of College and Claremont (take the 51 bus down College Ave.) which is open 24 hours per day.
There is an ATM located 30 meters north of the LBNL Cafeteria (Bldg 54) in a small hut at the edge of parking lot K1. There is also a US mail box located there.
On the south side of campus there are 4 ATMs located at Telegraph and Durant Ave. on the northeast corner at the Bank of America. There are also 6 ATMS located on the former Wells Fargo Bank, located on Bancroft Way (southern edge of campus) approx. 40 meters west of Telegraph Ave. (i.e., between Telegraph Ave. and Dana St.).
Downtown the Wells Fargo Bank has 6 ATMs at Center and Shattuck (across from the BART station). On the Northeast corner of Center and Shattuck is a Bank of America with several ATMs. There is are two Citibank branches downtown - one on Shattuck (west side), just south of University Avenue and one further south on Shattuck (east side). There are several other banks (e.g., Union Bank, Mechanics Bank, Washington Mutual, ...) downtown with ATM machines.
There are Wells Fargo Bank ATMs in the Oakland Airport and both Wells Fargo and Bank of America ATMs in the SFO airport (mostly B of A). All Andronico's grocery stores in Berkeley have Wells Fargo Bank ATMs. Most Safeway's also have Wells Fargo ATMs. Most Albertson's have Bank of America ATMs.
The closest gas station to campus is located at the SW corner of Fulton (a.k.a Oxford) and Durant Ave. just southwest of the campus. Fulton/Oxford is located one block east of Shattuck Ave. It is (an expensive) Shell station. It closes at 8:30 or 9:00 PM at night. There is also a hybrid gas station and car wash located a few blocks north on Fulton at Allston. Both of these gas stations have candy, cookies, drinks, etc. There is also a gas station at Telegraph and Ashby south of the campus (Union 76 I think).
There is a laundromat on Shattuck Ave., J and L Laundry and Cleaning at 2520 Shattuck Ave., just south of Dwight Street on the west side of the street. This is approximately 7 short blocks south of Center and Shattuck, 6 blocks south of the Shattuck Hotel. Tel: 510-848-1730.
Berkeley still has a good selection of bookstores, although there are no really good technical bookstores.
We will expect to provide a light breakfast (fruit and carbs), morning coffee, and an afternoon snack each day of the meeting. Breakfast and lunch can be purchased at the adjoining Faculty Club cafeteria.
Tentative plans for dinners are to have no-host dinners at the Faculty Club for Tuesday - Thursday. If we get more ambitious we may organize expeditions to restaurants in downtown Berkeley, where the food is better.
Berkeley has a plethora of good restaurants and pubs. See below.
