Protocol of Amendments to the Convention on the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO)

On October 23, 2007 President Bush transmitted the Protocol of Amendments to the Convention on the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) to the Senate for its advice and consent. The Protocol amends the Convention on the International Hydrographic Organization, which was done at Monaco on May 3, 1967, and entered into force for the United States on September 22, 1970. The Protocol will facilitate the reorganization of the IHO. The IHO facilitates safe and efficient maritime navigation by promoting uniformity in hydrographic surveys, nautical charts and other documents developed by hydrographic offices of member governments. Reorganization of the IHO will result in a more flexible, efficient, and visible organization that will serve important U.S. interests, including commercial shipping and scientific research.
