The IHO Gazetteer Files:

These files represent a gazetteer of undersea feature names supplied by the
International Hydrographic Organization, as used in the General Bathymetric Chart
of the Oceans (GEBCO) chart series [Reference: "Gazetteer of Geographical Names
of Undersea Features Shown (or which might be added) on the GEBCO and on the
IHO Small-scale International chart series". Monaco, IHO, 1988]

The files, containing 1862 entries, are in the following formats:

* ".dbf" database (dBASE and other compatibles)
* ".tab" tab-delimited for spreadsheets
* "BASIC" text, with quote-delimited fields separated by commas, with one file for
  each letter of the alphabet. (This last format also may have multiple records
  per entry, as some fields need more than one line of text. Also, records are
  separated by "____________" strings in each field.
  
In each data base, the following fields are used:

Name (Feature Name)
Position (Latitude and Longitude in degrees and minutes of point feature, or
  endpoints of linear feature)
GEBCO# (GEBCO Chart number on which the feature can be found)
SmScaleINT# (Small Scale International Chart number where feature can be found)
Remarks (cross-references, references to GEBCO/SCGN meeting numbers, and 
  names and generic terms which are also shown in the "Gazetteer of Undersea
  Features -- Names Approved by the United States Board on Geographical Names",
  denoted by an asterisk [*] in the Remarks field.)
  
A separate "Alphabet" directory is included on this disc for the 26 individual
files in BASIC format, so that small text editor programs can examine portions
of the total data base.
