Port Construction Ad Campaign Promotes 'Improving to Keep You Moving'

(07/24/2008)
This summer, U.S. Customs and Border Protection has launched an aggressive communications campaign to advise travelers of technology-related construction at the nation’s busiest 39 land ports of entry. The "Improving to keep you moving"- themed campaign includes TV, radio and print ads that coincide with local construction to help travelers be aware of construction timeframes as well as potential impact to wait times.

The ads also remind travelers of online resources, including current document requirements and wait time information. They also supplement local news releases and ongoing outreach to community leaders and stakeholders. ( Travel )

The construction involves technology upgrades that include both software and hardware updates and the deployment of Radio Frequency Identification, or RFID technology. This technology, also used in CBP’s trusted traveler programs since 1995, will help create more efficient borders thanks to newly available RFID-enabled documents such as the passport card and enhanced driver’s license.

These documents are part of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, a key 9/11 Commission recommendation and 2004 law that mandates a passport or similar document for entry or re-entry into the United States, which goes into effect for land and sea travel June 1, 2009.
