Border Patrol agent dies saving canine partner

The body of Agent Richard Goldstein was found floating in a canal near the Riverside and Imperial, Calif. county line, which agency officials say is a hot spot for smuggling drugs and people. It is suspected that he died while rescuing his canine partner, Carlo, from the Coachella Canal near Niland, Calif.

He was reported missing after his SUV was found parked and idling along the Canal. His service K-9 was found outside the SUV. The Coachella Canal is 60 feet wide at the top and 15 feet deep. It runs from the All American Canal that roughly parallels the U.S.-Mexico border 122 miles along the east side of the Salton Sea to Indio, according to the Coachella Valley Water District.

"He was very well liked, well respected by the rank and file agents, as well as by agency administrators,” Supervisory Border Patrol Agent David Kim said.

Goldstein, 37, is the first agent from the Riverside County area to be killed since 1996. A five-year veteran of the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, Goldstein was assigned to the El Centro Sector, serving Riverside and Imperial counties. He leaves behind a wife Katherine, two step-sons, and one grand-daughter.
