This data set consists of a digitized format of an original map entitled "Map of Louisiana showing the Vegetation Type of Louisiana Coastal Marshes 1949". The original data set was collected through visual field observations by Ted O'Neil along north-south transects walked across the coastal marshes and through interviews with landmanagers and trappers of Coastal Louisiana. The marsh type delineation lines were produced by freehanding contour lines on a base map based on this information. The resulting map of the zones was published in the book "The Muskrat in the Louisiana Coastal Marshes" by Ted O'Neil 1949 (This dataset comes as a result of Pitman-Robinson Act funding.) The map was then scanned, rectified using ERDAS Imagine software, and digitized on screen using Arc/Info 7.x. The water category was taken from the original base map.

The fresh water marshes primarily support fresh water vegetation. It is comparatively poor muskrat habitat, and more important for mink, raccoon, and wintering waterfowl. The recently introduced nutria (Myocastor coypu) have chosen this type of marsh as their most desirable habitat. The vegetative species on the Mississippi Delta are as follows: cattail, roseau cane, fresh marsh three-cornered grass, dog-tooth grass, yellow cutgrass, oyster grass adapted to both fresh and salt water marsh, and delta duck potato. At present the Delta is completely dominated by alligator grass and water hyacinth, two exotics that are rapidly making a place for themselves in the coastal marshes.

Floating fresh marshes are dominated by canouche, but the clay pan has subsided, leaving the marsh crust suspended on a sea of very loosely connected vegetative muck.

Marshes excessively drained by many tidal bayous give rise to rapid tidal fluctuations and marine deposits, which tend to elevate the marsh floor two to six inches above the muskrat producing area. Such marshes are practically without value as muskrat habitat. They produce some low quality raccoon and mink, but are excellent clapper rail habitat in the coastal marshes. Outstanding vegetation: Black rush (Juncus romemerianus), wiregrass (Spartina patens), oyster grass, and occasional clumps or stalks of saw grass. Salinities range from extremely saline to brackish.

- Enumerated_Domain_Value_Definition:
-
At near normal high tide level the brackish three-cornered grass peat marshes produce approximately 80% of the State's muskrat crop. The vegetation is predominately three-cornered grass (Scirpus olneyi), but it will revert to its climax species, wiregrass, if not properly burned at least every other year. Such marshes are also fair producers of mink and raccoon; they are also average waterfowl habitat. The three-cornered grass marsh extending from the east end of Marsh Island to Sabine Pass is the most important wintering range for blue geese.

This type of marsh is equally as productive as the nonfloating areas for shore periods of time. Muskrat populations will more rapidly denude the floating marshes of their food plants, thus creating extremely rotten, broken marshes which remain unproductive for longer periods than do the marshes with solid foundation.

Marshes in a balance between brackish and fresh support a wide variety of vegetative species. The outstanding species are saw grass, roseau cane, cattail, and bulrush. From a distance this marsh appears to contain only these taller species, however, upon close examination one finds three-cornered grass, wiregrass, bull-tongue, and hogcane. Occasionally when adjoining three-cornered grass marshes are heavily populated with muskrat, these areas are very productive, but only for a short period.

A coco (Scirpus Robustus) marsh is second to a brackish three-cornered grass marsh in muskrat productivity. Coco is also a subdominant species and difficult to produce. Wiregrass generally overpowers this valuable muskrat, waterfowl, and goose food plant. Hogcane is also an associated in this type marsh, generally dominating the higher bayou banks and ridges.

Other species appearing in this marsh are cattail, bulrush, roseau cane, bull-tongue, hogcane, and spike rush with yellow cutgrass near the ridges. This is considered deep marsh. Water levels range from plus 4" to plus 15". Where water control is possible and salt or brackish water is available, this type marsh can be converted to a three-cornered grass marsh. This area produced the greater portion of mink in the western part of the State.
