Nicole Robertson, an apprentice U.S. Coast Guard investigator at the Aircraft Repair and Supply Center in Elizabeth City, N.C., uses a portable scanning device to check the identification barcode on a Coast Guard HH60J rescue helicopter. The innovative “Data Matrix” technology, invented by NASA researchers to track aerospace parts and supplies, is now being studied to track and protect Coast Guard aircraft inventories. The technology was developed at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. (NASA/MSFC)
