Wellness corner: Enjoy the ride

Enjoy the ride!
Many areas around the country are experiencing heavy traffic or driving behaviors that are more and more stressful - is your area one of them? Your attitude is the key to dealing with many problems and stresses you face when commuting. Your Employee Assistance Program (EAP) offers several stress management suggestions for those who drive to and from work each day:

Commuter checklist--

  • Allow extra time for potential back-ups.
  • Listen to traffic reports; have an alternate route in mind.
  • Make sure your cell phone is charged up to report possible delays.
  • Consider car pools or public transportation.

Sit back and enjoy the ride--
Here are some ways to maintain a positive and safe attitude while commuting:

  • Accept that some situations are beyond your control.
  • Demonstrate courteous behavior toward other drivers.
  • Leave a little more distance between you and the car in front of you.
  • Listen to a book on tape or relaxing music.
  • Enjoy the scenery.

While commuting may be a fact of life, stress doesn't have to be your travel companion. Contact the EAP at (202) 927-5550 or (800) 755-7002 for more ideas on beating commuter stress.
