Two CBP noses receive top honors

For the past 15 years, law enforcement agencies in Tucson, Ariz., have held a competition to find the top law enforcement canine units. This year, 60 canine teams from agencies across the country came together to compete for top honors. Of the 60 total teams, 30 were military and 30 were civilian teams.

Two U.S. Customs and Border Protection canine teams received the first place trophy for “Top Agency Narcotic Detection.” CBP Officer, K-9 Clint Edwards and his canine partner “Herta” and CBP Officer, K-9 Jacqueline Yocupicio and her canine partner “Trouble” showed off their superior training by locating and completing the narcotic detection exercises well ahead of the competition. The Top Agency trophy is awarded to the agency with the highest point total divided by the number of teams entered. Each agency must enter at least two teams to be eligible for this trophy and CBP had six teams in the competition.

“Both of these officers and their canine partners are outstanding representatives of our agency and our commitment to professionalism and excellence,” said James Tong, CBP Port Director in Nogales, Ariz.

The 16th annual competition was hosted by the Tucson Police Department, Pima County Sheriff’s Department, Oro Valley Police Department, Davis Monthan 355th Security Forces Squadron, and the Tohono O’odham Tribal Police Department.

Other events in the competition were building search, area search, handler protection, agility, tactical obedience, and explosives detection. EC
