Both agents credit quick thinking and the extensive amount of training they received at the CBP Border Patrol Academy, for their ability to escape the ambush and drive to safety. "Training saved their lives," said Chief Patrol Agent John W. Montoya of the Laredo Border Patrol Sector. "Just as our agents are committed to protecting the homeland, we are committed to protecting our agents."

The Purple Cross Award is given to agents that are seriously wounded as a direct result of a hostile act or an armed conflict.

At a ceremony on March 25, 2004, Chief Montoya presented the Purple Cross Award to the agents. The Purple Cross Award is given to agents that are seriously wounded as a direct result of a hostile act or an armed conflict. Approximately 24 Purple Cross Awards have been awarded since 2002 when the Border Patrol began formally recognizing its agents for their sacrifices in the line of duty. This is the first for the Laredo Sector.

Law enforcement officers are routinely exposed to danger and can only prepare themselves for what may lie ahead. It is the training and devotion to their mission that allows them to successfully accomplish their mission everyday. Agent Mark Di Marco and Jose Garza II have recovered from their injuries and are back to full duty at the Laredo South Station.
