(01/15/2009)April 2009 Customs Broker License Examination
Summary: This notice announces that U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will conduct the Customs Broker License Examination on Monday, April 6, 2009. The examination will be given at various locations. Contact your local CBP service port for more details. The purpose of the examination, as authorized by 19 CFR 111.13(a), is to "determine the individual's knowledge of Customs and related laws, regulations and procedures, bookkeeping, accounting, and all other appropriate matters, necessary to render valuable service to importers and exporters."All exam applications and exam fees ($200) must be received and accepted by CBP at the service port where the applicant intends to take the examination on or before the close of business (COB) Friday, March 6, 2009 to be considered. Applications received by CBP after COB Friday, March 6, 2009 will not be accepted - NO EXCEPTIONS. or contact your local service port.CBP accepts cash, checks, and money orders only. CBP does not accept payment by credit card.Any applicant who files an application and subsequently wishes to withdraw from the exam, must submit a written notice of withdrawal to the CBP service port where the application was originally tendered, by COB Wednesday, April 1, 2009. On the day of the examination, after the test administrators have closed the doors to the examination room, applicants will not be permitted into the examination room and will not be allowed to sit for the examination. THERE WILL BE NO EXCEPTIONS. Please allocate sufficient time for travel to the examination site, as no exceptions will be made for traffic delays, late trains, or similar incidences.
- The Customs Broker License Examination consists of 80 multiple-choice questions. A score of 75 percent is required to pass. The examination lasts 4 hours. Exam topics typically include: Entry, Classification, Country of Origin, Trade Agreements, Antidumping/Countervailing Duty, Value, Broker Responsibilities, FP&F, Protests, Marking, Prohibited and Restricted Merchandise, Drawback, Intellectual Property Rights, and other subjects pertinent to a broker's duties.
- CBP wrote the April 2009 examination using the below mentioned references. Applicants should bring these and any other pertinent reference material to the examination. The use of any versions of the listed references other than those recommended is at the applicant's own risk.

- Directives Applicants must provide their own reference materials.
Examinee may use any written reference material; however, electronic reference material (i.e., laptops, PDAs, etc) are precluded.Any applicant caught cheating will be removed from the exam.Cell phones, pagers, and other communication devices may not be used inside the examination room.If the applicant achieves a passing score and wishes to apply to become a licensed Customs broker, an Application for Customs Broker License (CBP Form 3124), fingerprints, a current credit report and a License Application Fee of $200 will be required. To apply for a license, an applicant must be 21 years of age and a United States citizen at the time of the filing of the license application and not an officer or employee of the United States Government.
