A friend and colleague lost-but not forgotten

The United Stated Customs canine program lost a very special friend when Suzanne "Suzie" Ambler passed away on Sunday, February 24, 2002.

"We will miss Mrs. Ambler as a partner and contributor to our breeding program and as a friend to Customs. She was an ideal foster "Mom" and her puppies have done well in training and in the field," says Bonni Tischler, Assistant Commissioner, Office of Field Operations. "It takes special people to be successful foster families. Mrs. Ambler was very special, and we will always remember her."

Suzanne Ambler was a federal employee for 41 years, having started her government service in September 1957. She worked for the U.S. Customs Service from November 1985 until her retirement in August 1999 as a computer specialist stationed at Newington, Va.

Suzanne Ambler was 73 at the time of her death and is survived by a daughter, two sisters, and one brother. A flag was retired from the Canine Training Center and presented to Suzanne's daughter, Kathryn McGlynn, by Diana Lieber, U.S. Customs Breeding Program Supervisor.

Mrs. Cheryl Kraus' first and second grade classes at Friends Community School in College Park, Md., were studying working animals. Mrs. Kraus' husband, William, who works in the Office of Chief Counsel, suggested they invite one of the USCS detector dogs to visit. The dog and its handler came to class and gave a demonstration. When the "M" litter was born, William suggested that the students vote on a name and submit it. The name they voted on, and which was subsequently chosen by Ms. Tischler, was "Midnight."

Congratulations to all the winners.
