NLM Funds 34 Internet Connection Grants to Health-related Organizations

Since 1996, the National Library of Medicine (NLM) has made Internet Connection grants to health-related institutions that wish to provide Internet access to the professionals and clients of their organization. The latest awards are listed below. They will benefit health professionals, scientists and citizens in 24 states in the U.S. and in eight countries in Central Asia, Africa and the South Pacific.

The Internet has become an essential infrastructure in the health environment. It provides an abundance of resources such as: communication services including electronic mail and discussion groups; direct access to scientific and health-related information resources, including digital libraries, MEDLINE via PubMed, a host of federal and private sector databases; direct telehealth services; and access to supercomputers and remote scientific sensing instruments. NLM encourages all kinds and types of health institutions to use the Internet to gain access to these vast and rich resources, and to one another.

NLM's Internet Connection program was created in recognition that many health- related organizations, particularly smaller ones and those in rural or urban health-underserved areas, lack resources to initiate Internet access or to enhance low-bandwidth dial-up connectivity. The NLM Internet Connection grant supports the purchase and installation of equipment and services for connectivity to the Internet for one year. The 100th NLM Internet Connection grant was awarded earlier this year. Awardees may use the grant to initiate Internet service, to extend service to other centers or field locations, or to expand the bandwidth of their existing service.
